Job summary

Packagers work in the production department to package meat that has been made for custom processing, retail, and wholesale orders. Packagers will be competent in a variety of packaging techniques and able to work in several roles depending on staffing needs each day.

Essential functions

• Wrap meat for custom processing customers using freezer paper.
• Operate a thermoform fill-seal packager and vacuum sealer to package sausage orders.
• Label products properly using a deli scale, as well as a computer-controlled industrial label printer.
• Prepare meat products for packaging by cutting into retail-sized pieces.
• Assist with light meat production tasks, such as grinding beef and making patties, as necessary.
• Carry out completed orders for customers, as necessary.
• Follow USDA food safety guidelines and complete sanitation tasks necessary for safe operations.

Physical requirements

This position must be able to:

• Fluently communicate verbally and in writing in the English language.
• Safely work with sharp objects such as knives and scissors.
• Lift up to 40 pounds.
• Stand for an 8 hour shift: 2 - fifteen minute rest breaks and 1 - thirty minute meal break are provided during a shift.
• Operate in a cool packaging environment, as well as operate in coolers kept in the 40º range, to freezers that are kept in the 0º range.
• Operate Windows computers to run labeling software.

Education and experience

• Previous experience working in a food packaging position is preferred, but not at all necessary.
