In partnership with individuals and organizations, DNR staff manage fish, wildlife, forests, parks, air and water resources while promoting a healthy, sustainable environment and a full range of outdoor opportunities.

The Wisconsin DNR is hiring an LTE (Limited Term Employee) – Invasive Plant Field Specialist/ Plant Pest and Disease Specialist - Senior and Forester - Senior.

The preferred location for these positions is Rhinelander. Other locations in Northern Wisconsin may be considered pending supervisor approval and available space.

This dual LTE appointment is comprised of two 20-hour positions for an expected work schedule of 40 hours per week. The intention is to hire one candidate on both positions. See below for more information on the positions.


Position Summary


Plant Pest and Disease Specialist - Senior

The Invasive Plant Field Specialist works closely with the Forest Invasive Plant Program Coordinator and internal and external partners to survey and record the distribution of invasive plant populations across the state. This position routinely interacts with non-profit organizations, state and private property managers.

50% - Support internal and external partners to gather and review field data on invasive plant populations and control projects across the state.

30% - Create maps and reports from invasive plant field data.

10% - Assess and implement enhancements to invasive plant field data collection processes and reporting mechanisms.

10% - Review historical invasive plant records and organize for reporting purposes.

Forester - Senior

The Invasive Plant Field Specialist works closely with the Forest Invasive Plant Program Coordinator to coordinate and administer invasive plant outreach, survey and control projects and contracts across the state. This position works with state and municipal properties to determine needs, prioritize projects, write contracts, track budgets, and report on project accomplishments. This position routinely interacts with state and municipal property managers and agency financial specialists.

50% - Prioritization, coordination and contract administration for invasive plant survey and control projects on DNR managed forested lands across the state. Includes field work to verify invasive plant populations, project details and contract accomplishments.

30% - Coordination and implementation of invasiveplant outreach projects at the property and regional levels.

20% - Provide plant identification and technical knowledge of biology, survey and management of invasive plants to contractors and partners.

Salary Information


These positions pay between $22.00 - $24.00 per hour and are in pay schedule and range 15-03. For current and eligible former State employees, compensation will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan.

Job Details


This is a Limited Term Employment (LTE) position. LTE positions do not automatically lead to permanent state employment or enjoy the same benefits as permanent employees; however, these positions do offer valuable work experience and an opportunity to learn more about career opportunities with the Department of Natural Resources and the State of Wisconsin.

LTE employees are limited to working 1039 hours per position within a twelve-month period.

Qualifications


Plant Pest and Disease Specialist - Senior

Required:
  • Excellent communication and organization skills with attention to detail
  • Working knowledge of invasive plant biology, prevention, management, inventory and monitoring; including plant identification skills
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  • Working knowledge of GIS and ESRI software, including ArcGIS Online
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, meet deadlines and work effectively with teams and a diverse group of customers
  • Must possess a valid driver's license or be able to provide your own transportation. Some overnight travel will be required.
Preferred:
  • Work experience surveying and managing invasive plants
  • Experience creating and managing data sets
  • Work experience coordinating projects with multiple partners

Forester - Senior

Required:
  • Excellent communication and organization skills with attention to detail
  • Working knowledge of invasive plant biology, prevention, management, inventory and monitoring; including plant identification skills
  • DATCP pesticide applicator certification or willingness to obtain the certification
  • Physical ability to work indoors in an office setting and outdoors conducting field work in all seasons
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, meet deadlines and work effectively with teams and a diverse group of customers
  • Must possess a valid driver's license or be able to provide your own transportation. Some overnight travel will be required.
Preferred:
  • Work experience administering invasive plant survey and control projects
  • Work experience coordinating projects with multiple partners
