Job description
As our Voluntary Plan PFML Specialist, you will display empathy, compassion, and resourcefulness while providing excellent service to both internal and external customers. Reviewing and analyzing information obtained through source documents and client/customer interviews to make voluntary plan determinations and ensuring compliance with Paid Family & Medical Leave standards and laws. You will communicate with employers who are choosing to administer an independent paid leave benefit program for their employees. The position’s main objective is to ensure the voluntary plan meets or exceeds benefits offered by Washington State’s Paid Family and Medical Leave program.
As a Voluntary Plan Paid Family and Medical Leave Specialist 2, you will serve as the face of the program for employer interactions, educating customers on program requirements and laws. You will provide excellent customer service in a timely and accurate manner through a variety of communication channels such as telephone and email.
What a typical day looks like:
- Resolve complex problems related to voluntary plan implementation and determination. Follow procedural steps necessary for resolution, working closely with program staff to implement the resolution, and communicating results to the customer.
- Initiate, receive and respond to routine and complex correspondence and inquiries from employers and businesses and/or their representatives.
- Research, locate and provide information about voluntary plans inquiries including general questions, explaining program requirements, voluntary plan application procedures, law changes, and any change of circumstance.
- Review, determine, and document initial applications for voluntary plans, annual reviews as assigned, and plan withdrawals.
- Detect plan discrepancies and clarify information through telephonic and electronic inquiries, correspondence, and interviews.
Required:
The qualified candidate will have one (1) or more of the following experiences and/or education such as experience examining and processing benefit claims which includes, a combination of education and/or related experience equivalent to five (5) years.
OR One year of experience equivalent to the PFML Specialist 1 with another state that administers a paid family medical leave program.
OR Successful completion of the training plan as a PFML Specialist 1

- Per Gov. Inslee’s Directive 22-13.1, (Download PDF reader), employees of the Washington State Employment Security Department (ESD) must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
