Job Description

SUMMARY: The literacy specialist will provide training and support to grade K-12 teachers in the area of literacy including the integration of science of reading practices and literacy in other content-area instruction. This specialist will also support districts in curriculum planning and development and choosing appropriate instructional materials for students.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Communication of Services:
Communicate regularly with teachers and district leaders to determine needs and provide services
Continuous Professional Learning:
Maintain current knowledge of research and effective practices in the area of research-based literacy curricula for students, instruction, assessment, and professional development
Participate in specialist training provided by DESE as well as ongoing self-study
Willingness to be trained as a Science of Reading trainer for K-2, 3-6, or both, depending on need
Provide Training and Assistance:
Provide assistance and training in current literacy standards and assessment
Provide ongoing support through on-site technical assistance in districts, models of best practices, observation, and coaching of instructional facilitators and K-12 teachers, support of school districts’ curriculum development and alignment, assessment analysis and alignment, technology integration, professional development, and leadership
Assist K-12 literacy teachers and administrators by modeling effective instruction
Provide professional development opportunities across the state in both face-to-face and online training modes
Provide approved professional development, technical assistance, and targeted professional development based on needs assessment data from co-op member districts and schools

Professionalism
Exhibit a positive attitude and professional style that contributes to the overall public perception of the Arch Ford Education Service Cooperative, including social media presence
Maintain accurate records to fulfill job requirements
Excels at building relationships with teachers and administrators
Proficient in Google applications including slides, email, video conferencing, etc.



QUALIFICATIONS:

Master’s degree or higher in the area of specialty
Hold a current Arkansas Teaching License in the area of literacy
A minimum of 5 years of teaching experience in a classroom setting
Experience in adult learning situations and team problem-solving
Experience with teaching and/or coaching in the use of HQIM for literacy instruction (preferred)
RISE K-2 or 3-6 trainer (preferred)
Knowledge of dyslexia strategies (preferred)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Specialist will be required to stand for long periods of time to provide professional learning opportunities to teachers (approximately 6 hours per day), walk to interact with teachers, sit, stoop, or crouch
Use hands to handle or feel, type, and pick up objects, and reach with hands and arms
Talk or hear to communicate effectively
Frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
