Salary range: The UC academic salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. The current base salary range for this position is $49,000 - $63,000. Off-scale salaries' which yield compensation that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.

Anticipated start: May 1, 2023

Position duration: One year with the possibility of extension based on performance and availability of funding.

Position description

The Department of Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a Junior/Assistant Specialist in the Hariharan Lab, in the area of molecular genetics of growth regulation and development in Drosophila.
The Hariharan Lab uses Drosophila to investigate the mechanisms that regulate tissue growth and regeneration. The duties of the position include:

Conduct a research that investigates growth and regeneration of Drosophila imaginal discs.
Conduct genetic experiments in Drosophila that involve the setting up, execution and interpretation of genetic crosses. Many experiments involve the dissection of Drosophila larval tissues and adult tissues, their analysis by immunohistochemistry and visualization using confocal microscopy. The technique of visualization of gene expression using the hybridization chain reaction is routinely used in the laboratory.
Use single-cell RNA seq data to generate hypothesis-driven genetic experiments.
Prepare data for verbal presentation, and figures and manuscripts, for submission to peer-reviewed journals.
Conduct research in a collaborative environment with an appreciation for lab safety and an environment that values equity, inclusion and diversity.
Assist and participate in the maintenance and running of the lab.
This position is represented by Academic Researchers Unit Union and covered by a collective bargaining agreement.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Bachelor's degree or enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program, or equivalent international degree.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
Bachelor's Degree or equivalent international degree.

Preferred qualifications
Advanced level courses in genetics with proficiency in Drosophila genetics; dissection of Drosophila tissues; immunohistochemistry and microscopy; basic molecular biology techniques; ability to design and interpret experiments; ability to prepare figures for manuscripts.
Demonstrated proficiency to work as part of a research team.
Productivity as assessed by publications in either peer-reviewed journal or in a preprint server such as BioRxiv that are relevant to the research field described above.
