The International Pre-arrival Advisor (IPA) serves as an advisor for newly admitted international students with regard to communicating important pre arrival information and the issuance of their immigration documents The IPA acts as a source of information on regulatory requirements, personal concerns, financial and visa requirements. The IPA provides quality services and act as the primary contact for general information on the processing of international students’ immigration documents.
The IPA is responsible for working with the transfer student population. This includes outreach with UMD area community colleges, and U.S. high schools developing targeted sessions for transfer students and developing clear communication to this population.
When assuming the regulatory role, the IPA is officially known as a Designated School Official (DSO) for F-1 students and an Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for J 1 students. As the DSO/ARO, the advisor ensures that our international students, and ultimately the University, will be in compliance with immigration regulations.
To advance an understanding of university policies and procedures, the IPA communicates effectively with both the international students and the academic and administrative staff who serve them. The IPA designs and implements instructional programs, pre-arrival orientations and workshops and other opportunities that support international students and UMD departments. In addition, the advisor will meet and work with various University offices involved in the admission process.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Experience:
3 years professional experience working with international students.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of F-1 and J-1 visa regulations.
- Knowledge of business technologies for use in an electronic student application process.
- Excellent oral and written communications skills.
- Excellent customer service and public relations skills.
- Ability to apply discretionary judgement skills and maintain confidentiality.
Other:
U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Permanent Residence status required by US federal regulations for DSO.ARO certification
- Master’s degree in Education, Student Counseling or other relevant degree
- Knowledge of a language other than English
- Experience maintain student data and SEVIS records.
