What You'll Do:


1. Maintain wind, brass, string, and percussion instruments and supplies – 40-45% of time

  • Maintain a working knowledge and accurate condition assessment for St. Olaf’s collection of over 800 instruments and related accessories (bows, cases, percussion stands, etc.).
  • Work with the Finance Office to keep accurate insurance records for this musical instrument inventory, including the department’s Orff instrument collection.
  • Assist St. Olaf students, staff, and faculty with instrument maintenance and repair needs for college- owned instruments, including performing repairs as indicated in #2 below, in alignment with the Instrument Coordinator’s qualifications.
  • Coordinate with department chair and studio faculty to assess and adjust musical instrument inventory on an annual basis, including prioritizing capital expenditures.
  • Assist students and faculty with music instrument accessory needs such as mouthpieces, shoulder rests, and maintenance oils. [N.B. - These items are not considered part of the musical instrument inventory, but are crucial to effective function of the inventory.]
  • Maintain inventory of instruments for the MUSIC 165, 166, 167, 168, and 169 Techniques courses, including rentals when necessary.

2. Inventory maintenance and repair – 30% of time

  • Annual inventory and assessment of all 800 + instruments
  • Minor maintenance performed annually – wipe down, lubricate, tighten loose screws/pegs

3. Perform Christiansen Hall of Music building-specific job functions – 15% of time

  • Coordinate music locker assignments with student and music locker repairs with locksmiths and other Facilities staff as needed.

4. Manage student workers – 5% of time

  • Hire, train, and supervise student workers
  • Approve timecards

5. Assist Summer Music Academy director – 5-10% of time

Who You Are:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent; maintain a valid driver’s license and meet St. Olaf College driver authorization criteria with a satisfactory driving record
Experience: 2+ years of experience in music-related field
