The School of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE ), 9-month, fixed-term Instructor/Senior Instructor I position.

This position focuses the preparation of mechanical engineering students in the School of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering (MIME) with a focus on first-year experiences in Engineering+ and experiential learning opportunities. Development and instruction of courses that include experiential learning opportunities will include engagement with industry and community partners, collaboration with the humanitarian engineering program, and coordination with the Design for Social Impact initiative.
This Instructor will teach courses and create experiential learning opportunities to advance career readiness, retention, and graduation rates as key outcomes. The Instructor will teach in the Engineering+ first-year program, undergraduate and graduate mechanical engineering program, and other programs in the School of MIME depending upon interests and teaching needs. They will also supervise undergraduate and graduate assistants who support the delivery of courses. This position will report to the School Head and will work closely with Program Coordinators for the undergraduate degrees offered by the School, the Associate Head for Undergraduate Programs, and staff who support teaching labs and industry relationships.
The work of this position will promote creative engineering design, critical thinking, student knowledge and skills, and grow the strong foundation and success of existing curriculum to further develop and deliver the first-year Engineering+ experience.

Position Duties
90% Teaching and Curriculum Development
Teaching responsibilities include developing, continuously improving, and teaching courses; assessment of course learning outcomes; and offering office hours. The number and types (size, modality, level) of courses taught each year will depend upon teaching needs and requirements and will generally follow the College of Engineering teaching workload guidelines. Other responsibilities may include advising students, project groups, student organizations, honors students, or senior project teams, as examples.
Ensure that students, teaching assistants, and others under instructional supervision are briefed on and complying with OSU Environmental Health and Safety protocols pertaining to the execution of their teaching and learning activities.

10% Service
Participate as a collegial member of the unit and to perform appropriate service that contributes to the effectiveness of the School, the College, the University, and, if possible, the profession. Service includes participation in School, College, and University committees, attending faculty meetings, and contributing to outreach activities. Participation in service to the profession, includes leadership or active membership roles in professional organizations and academic and professional conferences as appropriate.
Minimum/Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in mechanical engineering or closely related field.
  • Excellent teaching skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in effectively managing people and diverse students to their academic and professional goals.
  • Evidence of promoting and enhancing inclusion through ongoing action in teaching, scholarship, and/or professional services.


For appointment at the rank of Instructor:
  • Experience teaching at the college- or university-level.

For appointment at the rank of Senior Instructor I:
  • Four years of professional experience teaching at the college- or university-level.
  • Sustained record of exceptional teaching at the college- or university- level as evidenced by student evaluations of teaching.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in mechanical engineering or closely related field
  • Experience teaching first-year engineering courses
  • Experience teaching courses with a substantial experiential learning component, such as study abroad or service learning


For appointment at the rank of Senior Instructor I:
  • Demonstrated experience implementing instructional innovations into first-year engineering courses
  • Demonstrated experience developing courses with substantial experiential learning components
  • Specialized knowledge in researching the teaching of engineering students
