Join as a highway maintenance specialist! You will be part of our maintenance crew in Salem. In this role, you will do a variety of tasks such as maintaining the roadways, bridges, highways, and freeways. You will also work with the striping crew to help complete the different projects within Region 2. Apply today!

A day in the life:
  • Perform minor surface repairs to the roadways including but not limited potholes, concrete patching, small in lay work and deep basing.
  • Clean catch basins and closed drainage systems using hand tools and or power tools.
  • Clear vegetation on right of way using chainsaws, hand tools, motorized brush cutters and brush chippers.
  • Maintain, repair or replace metal guardrail, concrete barriers, fences, glare screens, roadway markers or milepost markers.
  • Actively respond to weather related emergencies by assessing the need for and performing snow removal, de-icing or sanding to keep roadways, highways and bridges open for the traveling public.
  • Work closely with hazardous materials such as epoxy/paints, water based paints, thermos plastics, thinners, acetones, etc. when striping highways.
  • Apply pesticide/herbicidal sprays on vegetation along the rights of way, medians and rest areas.
  • Repair, replace and/or maintain specific roadway surfaces, sub-layers or shoulders on state highways and /or facilities.
  • Operate heavy and light machinery for various applications such as dozers, rotary snowplows, road sweepers, lowboys, sewer cleaners, etc.
  • Work primarily outdoors year-round and in all weather conditions.

What we need:
Two (2) years of maintenance and/or construction experience in roadway/highway, bridge, sign, drawbridge or landscape (any type of ground maintenance, including tree, shrub and lawn maintenance; sprinkler system maintenance, cleaning ditches and catch basins, or work related to professional/commercial or public landscaping, farming or logging);
AND
Experience in each of the following areas:
A) operating heavy and/or light motorized equipment;
B) using hand and power tools;
C) performing minor servicing of equipment; AND
D) applying safety procedures.
OR
Two (2) years of experience operating construction and maintenance machinery to include one or more of the following types: front-end loader, road grader, bulldozer, backhoe, tractor/low-boy, and 5 or 10 yard dump truck.
Driving is an essential function of this position. You must have a valid driver license and an acceptable driving record. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s). Your license does not have to be issued in Oregon to be considered.
