Duties
The major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Performs peripheral and EJ venipuncture to obtain serum blood samples as initiate IV therapy as ordered according to established policy and procedures.
- Assess IV sites and reports signs of infiltration or inflammation or phlebitis. Able to discontinue IVs and saline locks as needed. Assists medical and nursing personnel with the set up for sterile procedures such as suturing, spinal taps, and the insertion of chest tubes.
- Changes sterile dressings, and performs wound cleaning and irrigation.
- Sets up, operates, and monitors medical equipment designated as part of a patient's treatment regimen to include monitoring equipment, bladder scans, patient warming and cooling equipment, lifts, and oxygen and inhalation therapy.
- Applies external urinary devices such as condom catheters, and performs invasive procedures including indwelling foley catheters placement and nasogastric tubes.
- Cleans used medical instruments and needed and disposes of waste materials.
- Checks and restocks equipment, supplies, and exam areas as assigned.
- Performs a range of diagnostic support duties such as taking, recording, and reporting to nurses and physicians vital signs including pulse, respirations, blood pressure, temperature, weights, orthostatic vital signs, and oxygen saturation monitoring.
- Performs EKG's and establishes continuous cardiac and non-invasive blood pressure monitoring for patients.
- Recognizes abnormalities and takes immediate action to report abnormal vital signs, capillary blood glucose, or any symptoms of distress to the attention of appropriate ED team members.
- Assists in the observation and monitoring of patients for signs of adverse reaction to medications and treatments, identifies subtle changes regarding patient condition, and reports observations to appropriate team members.

Physical Requirement s: Good vision and hearing are required to collect patient data. The work requires above average agility and dexterity. The work requires long periods of regular and recurring walking, standing, stooping, heavy lifting, bending, stretching, pushing, turning, and at times lifting heavy equipment or patients. The work requires the use of good body mechanics and stamina to withstand stress. Transporting patients to procedures is necessary. Must be able to effectively wear personal protective equipment. Exposure to chemicals including cleaning and decontamination solutions and powders.

Qualifications
GS-6 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-5 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes, but are not limited to: received written and verbal requests for a variety of difficult exams, entering consults, scheduling exams, entering clinical reminders, entering requests for labs and x-rays; has updated patient demographic information; has set controls, calibrated and operated equipment such as EKG machines, CBG monitors, ABI doppler, bladder scan, spirometer, and vital sign monitors; has performed a variety of routine and difficult diagnostic tests and procedures including CBG, venipuncture, orthostatic blood pressure, oxygen saturation, visual acuity, 12-lead EKG, ABI, PFT, foot exams, and the like. Administrative experience such as documenting patent information relating to pre-testing or post-procedure activities, appointment scheduling, entering lab requests in the system.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education
There is no educational substitution for the GS-6 level.
