GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
Under the general direction of the Aquatics Program Specialist, responsible for daily pool operations and ensuring effective performance of part-time lifeguard staff. Assists in maintaining the facility. Performs lifeguard and related duties, assesses all levels of swimming skills of patrons per guidelines of the American Red Cross Swimming Program, and provides swimming instruction. Oversees the monitoring of participants, spectators, and facility users to ensure orderly conduct and maintain discipline.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Assists with the planning and organization of workloads and staff assignments; assists with the training, motivation and evaluation of assigned staff; recommends changes as needed.
- Inspects, cleans and maintains the aquatic facility on a daily basis; reports required repair work or unsafe conditions as needed.
- Safeguards and regulates the conduct of patrons to prevent unsafe practices and accidents; administers first aid or cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as needed. Responsible for the prompt performance of emergency lifesaving and rescue techniques.
- Monitors and enforces pool safety standards and facility operational rules for all individuals using the facilities.
- Responds to patron inquires or concerns in a timely manner; escalates to the supervisor as needed
- Adheres to all state, health, and safety standards and policies in regards to pool cleanliness and pool water chemistry through testing of water samples and daily maintenance of the pool; performs various maintenance duties as directed.
- Plans, teaches, and assesses swim lesson classes that support the general teaching outlines provided by Aquatic Program Specialist and the American Red Cross Swimming Program.
- Tests program participants for swimming skill levels; passes participants for participation in more advanced classes.
- Maintains and submits records and documentation of instructional swim lessons and daily pool programs to include patron attendance and pool chemical recordings to the Aquatic Program Specialist.
- Presents professional appearance and attitude at all times and maintains a high standard of customer service.
- Responsible for program registrations for patrons enrolling in aquatic programs.
- Assists with the implementation of aquatic programs, city-wide programs, and special events as needed. Performs related duties as directed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
- Knowledge of and ability to ensure and enforce assigned safety rules, regulations, and procedures when maintaining an aquatic facility.
- Skill in pool, water rescue, accident prevention techniques, water safety procedures, standard first aid, and CPR.
- Ability to react efficiently and effectively in emergency situations.
- Ability to instruct and monitor part time lifeguards.
- Strong swimming and life saving abilities.
- Ability to perform assigned tasks requiring physical strength and agility.
- Ability to stand or sit for long periods of time in outside air temperatures and conditions.
- Ability to communicate effectively with patrons, other employees, and the general public.
- Ability to teach, plan, and perform assigned duties and swim classes with proficiency.
- Ability to work flexible hours to include day, evening and weekend shifts.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Must be a minimum of 18 years of age. Must have high school diploma/GED. Most possess current Red Cross Lifeguard, Red Cross Water Safety Instructor, Red Cross First Aid, and Red Cross CPR certifications. Must have at least two (2) years paid Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor experience.
Physical Requirements
Ability to work mainly outdoors in a variety of weather and temperature conditions. Tasks may involve the ability to exert heavy lifting (up to 50 pounds). Job duties and responsibilities require mobility and the ability to participate in activities such as bending, lifting, carrying, swimming, kneeling, climbing and sitting. Ability to visually observe assigned work area. Completion of a swim test is required.
ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Tasks are regularly performed outside with potential for exposure to adverse conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, fumes, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature, and noise extremes, and chemicals.
SENSORY REQUIREMENTS
Tasks require sound and visual perception and discrimination. Tasks require oral communications ability.
