SUMMARY
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Technician I perform technical duties in the development and maintenance of creating, verifying, and editing a geographic information system (GIS) database using specialized software for tax mapping, voter registration, addressing, engineering, or legal descriptions. GIS Technician (I) enter records into GIS databases. GIS Technicians will have a moderate amount of customer contact, providing information to and answering questions from the public. Their work is performed under the direction of a supervisor and is reviewed through use of production reports for accuracy, completeness, and adherence to policies and procedures. Although this job is typically performed in an indoor setting, there are times they need to travel to locations in order to verify the accuracy of mapping information. This job is distinguished from Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Technician II by the lesser degree of skills and responsibilities required of the duties.
TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:
- Provides service to internal and/or external customers.
- Maintains department interest and efficiencies by attending meetings, tracking productivity, creating reports, representing department findings in court, and maintaining files and equipment for the department.
- Enters or modifies basic records in a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) database and/or on a paper map (e.g., property owner changes, property splits or combinations, jurisdictional assets, voting districts) using techniques such as coordinate geometry and keyboard entry of tabular data.
- Enters or modifies complex or impactful records in external databases or internal Geographic Information Systems (GIS) databases (e.g., right of ways, roads, annexations, deannexations, new subdivisions, new construction, reconstruction) using techniques such as coordinate geometry and keyboard entry of tabular data.
- Researches, verifies accuracy and completeness of, and assigns records to staff of GIS related information in preparation of it being entered into GIS database.
- Works in the field to add and/or verify information (addresses, assets, attributes).
- Produces, maintains, and distributes data layers, maps, tables, or reports using data extraction and spatial analysis techniques.
- Engages in activities designed to ensure professional development, awareness of developments in the field, and knowledge of relevant practices, rules, laws, policies, and/or guidelines.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Option A:
- Work experience using GIS software (e.g., ESRI, ARC Info).
- Experience problem-solving and explaining GIS information to customers, coworkers, etc.
Option B:
- Associate Degree in Geographic Information Systems.
- Experience problem-solving and explaining GIS information to customers, coworkers, etc.
Option C:
- Completed coursework in the areas of Geographical Information Systems, Cartography, Drafting, or Geography.
- Experience problem-solving and explaining GIS information to customers, coworkers, etc.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Preferred Qualifications are examples of experience and education considered to be highly desirable by hiring agencies.
- Bachelor's Degree in Geographic Information Systems.
- Experience reading legal descriptions (e.g., deeds, surveys).
- Experience reading engineering drawings.

- Knowledge of GIS hardware (e.g., plotters and scanners) data communication and network methods and techniques.
- Knowledge of principles and methods for describing the features of land, sea, and air masses, including their physical characteristics, locations, and interrelationships.
- Knowledge of relational database operations.
- Knowledge of terminology, methods and practices used in GIS mapping and addressing systems.
- Knowledge of the standards for GIS indexing systems according to legal standards, local, state and departmental specifications and guidelines.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Work is conducted almost exclusively indoors in an office setting.
- Work involves use of standard office equipment, such as computer, phone, copier, etc.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Job involves physical exertion required for sustained periods of light physical activity such as walking, standing, or bending. May involve regular lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
