Orientation Mobility Specialist

Location: Lapeer County (Lapeer, MI)

Employment Type: Part-time or Full-time

LCISD (Lapeer County Intermediate School District) is currently seeking an Orientation Mobility Specialist to join our team. This role will involve providing orientation and mobility services to students with visual impairments. As an Orientation Mobility Specialist, you will help visually impaired students gain the skills necessary to navigate their environments safely and independently.

Responsibilities:

• Provide orientation and mobility services to students with visual impairments.
• Assess and evaluate students' orientation and mobility needs.
• Develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) for each student.
• Teach students how to use mobility aids such as canes and guide dogs.
• Train students on how to navigate their environment using auditory, tactile, and visual cues.
• Collaborate with other professionals, including teachers, occupational therapists, and speech-language pathologists, to ensure the student's needs are met.
• Communicate regularly with parents and guardians to update them on the student's progress.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in orientation and mobility or a related field.
• Certification from the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP).
• Experience working with students with visual impairments.
• Knowledge of assistive technology for individuals with visual impairments.
• Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and other professionals.

This is a part-time or full-time position. If full-time, the Orientation Mobility Specialist will also support Tuscola, Sanilac, and Huron ISD. If only LCISD, we can do 1 or 2 days per week.
