Fire Alarm Technician Apprentice or Journeyman
Job description
- Troubleshoots and/or assists in repairing complex fire alarm and other electronic systems.
- Assists engineering and design staff with development of equipment and standards.
- Locates and corrects defects in fire alarm systems, and makes appropriate repairs.
- Tests and evaluates assembly and system performance and reliability.
- Performs or assists in the preventative maintenance on fire alarm equipment, by replacing parts, testing and inspecting equipment as needed.
- Fabricates and/or assists in installing fire alarm systems from blueprints, diagrams and specifications provided.
- Responds to and monitors fire alarm systems and other emergency situations on an on-call basis.
- Maintains various records including maintenance logs, work orders, time cards, and billing materials.
- Provides technical guidance and direction to less senior technicians.
- Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
- Cleans equipment, shop area and work site.
- Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.
- Apprentice: Minimal experience and knowledge of fire alarm/electronic field (aptitude required).
- Journeyman: Minimum four years of experience in fire alarm/electronic field, with two of those years directly related to the fire alarm field.
- Four years of experience in fire alarm field.
- State Fire Alarm Certificate.
- Notifier Brand specific experience.
- Comprehensive knowledge of all state life safety, and fire codes.
- Advanced knowledge of fire alarm installation and maintenance techniques.
- Skill in the use of various hand and power tools common to the trade.
- Basic computer skills.
- Customer service skills.
- Skill in troubleshooting and repairing all types of electronic circuitry.
- Ability to create, read, understand, and build to specifications from blue prints and schematic drawings.
- Ability to work without supervision.
- Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers and customers.

The position requires considerable physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position including heavy lifting and/or pushing and pulling of heavy objects. Employees must be prepared to assume uncomfortable positions such as crawling, kneeling, and squatting. Additionally, the work environment can include confined or narrow spaces. Employees occasionally work outdoors, may not be protected from weather conditions or contaminants, and may be exposed to extreme temperature fluctuations.
