The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) keeps New York City healthy, safe, and clean by collecting, recycling, and disposing of waste, cleaning City streets and vacant lots, and clearing snow and ice. DSNY is the nation's largest municipal sanitation agency, with nearly 10,000 employees, 59 district garages, and a fleet of more than 5,000 trucks, cars, and other types of equipment. The Department clears litter, snow, and ice from approximately 6,500 miles of City streets and removes debris from vacant lots as well as abandoned vehicles from City streets.

Reporting to the Deputy Commissioner for Policy & Strategic Initiatives, the Executive Director for Policy & Planning will assist in managing DSNY’s policy and strategic initiatives portfolio, which includes, but is not limited to: the operations management division, and recycling and sustainability programs.

The responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Assist the Deputy Commissioner in the development and rollout of the agency’s major public initiatives.

  • Manage the agency’s policy and strategic initiatives portfolio.

  • Support the Deputy Commissioner in the day-to-day management of the bureau.

  • Work closely and collaboratively with the Deputy Commissioner and executive team to effectively promote the agency’s priorities to critical stakeholders to achieve the desired outcomes.

  • Coordinate across the agency on priority projects for the bureau.

Minimum Qual Requirements

1. Graduation from an accredited college with a Baccalaureate degree plus specialized training in public management and evaluation.

Preferred Skills

  • MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) proficiency.
  • Excellent writing, communication, interpersonal, analytical, research, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Outstanding communication and writing skills.
  • Outstanding attention to detail and the ability to juggle various priorities and deliver under strict deadlines.
