Location: Remote/Hybrid – Requires Michigan Residency
Occasional In-Person Meetings Required

Purpose: This position provides program support to the Office of Equity and Minority Health (OEMH), under the Office of Race Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (REDI), related to equity, diversity, inclusion, and cultural and linguistic competency research. This position promotes best practices and develops and delivers related training. This position works with other OEMH/REDI staff to provide consultation to administrations and program areas for implementing equity and cultural and linguistic competency policies, processes, and practices.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Lead department-wide workgroups and projects that set high level direction relative to training and facilitation, curricula development and evaluation, program development and implementation, cultural change, and provision of highly skilled technical assistance on best practices for organization/systems level implementation of equity, diversity, inclusion, and cultural competency decisions.
  • Conduct presentations, stakeholder partnerships, research interpretation, and some project management.
  • Research, consolidate, analyze, and interpret emerging health equity, race equity, inclusion, and cultural/linguistic competency (CL/C) evidence-based, best, and promising practices.
  • Gain and maintain subject matter expertise related to: Race Equity, Health Equity; Cultural/linguistic competency; Social Justice topics, including diversity, inclusion, implicit bias, and race/ethnic identity development; training material and facilitation techniques/competencies; knowledge and skills assessment; organizational change/transformation theories.
  • Manage and facilitate difficult and complex conversations and subject matters.
  • Establish, design, and administer ongoing surveys or evaluation efforts to identify needs, gaps, and recommendations for program, planning and implementation.
  • Propose, develop, and set direction of programs, policies, and procedures to address and achieve equitable outcomes.
  • Use and maintain computer data bases to track and analyze data on program and service delivery.
  • Review and evaluate contracts for compliance with department policies and procedures related to grants and budgets.
  • Develop and implement training curricula using adult learning principles, in a coherent, comprehensible, and empowering manner.
  • Provide technical assistance and consultation resources to MDHHS program areas related to human capacity building; best practice standards and guidelines; effective training delivery and methods of facilitation; framing and communication; structural/systemic change.
  • Apply theories and practices of organizational change management and equitable decision-making.
  • Serve as a leader of change and organizational liaison for centralized and administrative areas.
  • Serve on departmental and/or statewide minority health coalitions, task forces and committees, as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements:


Education: A bachelor’s degree required in public health, sociology, social work, social science, psychology, community health, training and education, or a related field; master’s degree preferred.

Experience: Two to three years’ work experience developing and facilitating equity, diversity, inclusion, and/or cultural and linguistic competency training.

  • Demonstrated experience in public health and social justice.
  • Ability to passionately empower and inspire self and others.
  • Experience as an educator/trainer/facilitator with demonstrated knowledge and proficiency in equitable and culturally relevant delivery.
  • Excellent organization, planning, and time management skills.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Job may require moderate physical effort including lifting materials and equipment of <50 lbs. Routine physical activities: standing, sitting for long periods of time at a computer, viewing a CRT or VDT screen 50% to 75% of the time, walking, reaching, and bending. May require valid vehicle operator’s license where needed to perform duties of the position. Frequent deadlines. May include in-state and out-of-state travel for site visits, trainings, meetings, and other responsibilities related to position duties. Primarily remote work with some in-person commitments, subject to change.
