Responsible for conducting work necessary to assist and complete environmental tasks as assigned in support of the City Environmental and Risk Management programs. Works under the direction of the Environmental Compliance Administrator. The anticipated hiring range for this position is $22.31- $27.36 per hour for the Environmental Technician I, and $27.36 - $29.47 an hour for the Environmental Technician II, depending on qualifications and experience. Position will close to applicants on: Monday, May 22, 2023 at 12:00 P.M. M.S.T.

We are currently seeking a talented and motivated Environmental Technician to join the City of Loveland team. To help ensure that we are meeting and maintaining compliance with environmental regulations for our varying operations, the best candidate is able to successfully manage multiple priorities, is an effective communicator within many levels of the organization, performs and contributes consistently as a team member, and is focused to successfully complete individual work as well. Working with the Environmental Compliance Administrator, this role will add value by consistently maintaining relationships within the City to assist with and promote environmental compliance based on an understanding of operations and knowledge of state and federal environmental regulations. Essential Functions:
Field investigations and surveys, collecting data and samples within various media (air, soil, water, building materials, waste streams, etc.) in support of environmental projects and initiatives. Use and maintenance of field instrumentation (e.g., sampling equipment, measuring equipment, gas and water sensors or detectors, and GPS equipment.)

  • Assists departments with proper disposal or recycling of hazardous waste streams.
  • Special projects as assigned to assist Environmental Compliance Administrator. Projects may involve computer aided drafting, GIS applications, some technical writing, and database management (e.g., for asbestos, lead, or other materials, chemicals, or information of concern).
  • Assist in organizing and maintaining large volume of environmental project files
  • Assist in coordinating environmental training program

Environmental Tech II:
All functions of the Environmental Tech I plus:

  • Assist in organizing and maintaining technical information
  • Assist with Coordination of environmental compliance assessments.
  • Completes environmental compliance inspections

Other Job Functions:

  • May represent department through participation in City sponsored events or on committees
  • Performs other duties as assigned (such as special or short-term projects)
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Environmental Tech II:
All functions of the Environmental Tech I plus:

  • Collaborate and participate on city project teams.

Management Level and Responsibilities:
Required
Knowledge of: Some existing knowledge and understanding of various environmental regulations; environmental field screening instrumentation; collection techniques for various media; basic understanding of monitoring and analysis procedures for various media

Environmental Tech II:
All functions of the Environmental Tech I plus:
Basic understanding of monitoring, analysis procedures and a basic understanding and use of applicable PPE.

Skills in: Obtaining samples by following specified procedures; collecting and processing samples and data, performing data entry; communicating technical information orally or in writing for the Environmental Compliance Administrator; using computer hardware and software applications; communication; strong interpersonal communication as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, general public etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

Environmental Tech II:
All functions of the Environmental Tech I plus:
Collect and process samples using appropriate chain of custody procedures


Ability to: Adjust to multiple and changing priorities, remaining flexible; to build strong working relationships with high degree of ethics and integrity; produce quality, accurate, prompt and reliable work; communicate clearly and concisely in writing and verbally; adaptability and willing to receive coaching and development; maintain current knowledge base as technology and processes change; maintain compliance with policies and procedures; perform work safely and bring safety hazards to attention of manager and Safety; recognize when safety concerns exist.

Qualification's - Education & Experience:
Environmental Tech I:
Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Science or closely related field, or an Associate’s Degree in Natural Science with 2 years of additional experience, in environmental or other natural science (geology, biology, ecology, etc.); or vocational training and 3 years of work experience in an environmental or other natural science field required.

Must possess a valid driver’s license. OSHA 24-hour Hazwoper Certification required or ability to obtain within 3 months of hire date required. Two (2) years progressively responsible experience in the collection and processing of environmental or other technical data required. Environmental coursework may substitute for experience. Proficiency in computer aided design (CAD) drafting and/or GIS applications desired. CO Asbestos Building Inspector Certification or CO Air Monitoring Specialist Certification desired.

Environmental Tech II:
Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Science or closely related field; or an Associate’s Degree in Natural Science with 3 years of additional experience, in environmental or other natural science (geology, biology, ecology, etc.); or vocational training and 4 or more years of work experience in an environmental or other natural science field required.

Must possess a valid driver’s license. OSHA 40-hour Hazwoper Certification required or ability to obtain within 3 months of hire date is required. Three (3) years progressively responsible experience in the collection and processing of environmental or other technical data required. Environmental coursework may substitute for experience. Proficiency in computer aided design (CAD) drafting and/or GIS applications desired. CO Asbestos Building Inspector Certification or CO Air Monitoring Specialist Certification desired.

Level of Physical Effort:

  • Moderate to considerable physical effort that includes working from ladders in awkward positions. Frequent use of light or medium weight objects (e.g., 25-50 lbs) and use of medium weight tools.

Tasks are carried out in both an office and field setting. Typically requires stooping, crouching, reaching, lifting and moving and/or positioning objects up to 10 pounds. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently.

Physical Working Environment:

  • May be subject to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, fumes, odors, dusts, poor ventilation, chemicals, inadequate lighting, and workspace restrictions.
  • Occasional hazards that are predictable or well protected against
  • Regular exposure to heat and noise along with working outside in the elements
