JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC), in cooperation with the Kent Conservation District, a governmental subdivision of the State of Delaware, seek a contractual four-year term Environmental Scientist IV with DNREC’s Division of Watershed Stewardship, Shoreline and Waterway Management Section to work out of their Dover or Lewes, DE office location. This applicant must have a background in coastal science, science communication, and/or geospatial science to conduct research and outreach activities that support the management of Delaware's shorelines and waterways. At the end of the projected four-year term the Department will evaluate opportunities to extend employment, dependent upon funding availability and programmatic needs.

DUTIES:

The Scientist will contribute to the Shoreline and Waterway Management team by executing and overseeing scientific studies concerned with assessing, monitoring, quantifying, and documenting the effect of ocean and bay forces (storms, waves, currents, sea level rise, human influence, etc.) on the state's beaches, shores, and waterways. In particular, the Scientist will assist in the development and production of annual beach change reports and other data-driven management decision making tools, in part using beach survey data collected by the Section Survey team. The position will also assist in developing content for the Section’s websites and social media, as well as outreach activities for events. Applicants should have education, training, and/or direct work experience demonstrating competence in the following areas:

  • Field survey data collection and analysis (topographic and bathymetric surveys, sediment characterization).
  • GIS and/or coastal processes models and programs.
  • Experience communicating complex technical and natural resource management information to a general audience.
  • Developing digital materials for public outreach, including narratives and graphical figures.
  • Conducting and/or overseeing research projects, including the planning, data collection, experiment execution, analysis, and reporting phases.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Possess a Masters' degree or higher in an environmentally related scientific discipline, or a Bachelors’ degree in an environmentally related scientific discipline along with a current professional certification.
  • Possess scientific prominence or recognition with publications in a scientific or trade journal.
  • Three years' experience in environmental or natural resources project management which includes planning, developing, implementing, managing, and evaluating environmental or natural resources projects to ensure objectives are met.
  • Three years' experience in analyzing and evaluating scientific data.
  • Three years' experience in interpreting environmental laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures.

BENEFITS:

The Kent Conservation District offers a comprehensive benefits package including: 37.5 hours work week and flexible scheduling options: 15 paid vacation days the first year; 9 paid holidays a year; and 15 paid sick days per year. Pension and health insurance are also included in the benefits package. Direct Deposit of paychecks will be required as a condition of employment for new employees
