Salary: (Includes 9% Paramedic Premium)
Hourly: $27.43 - $34.61
Monthly: $6,655.74 - $8,398.09 (based on 56-hour work week)
Yearly: $79,868.88 – $100,777.08
TENTATIVE IAFF AGREEMENT:
Pending ratification of a tentative contractual bargaining agreement by IAFF Local 314, the following will be effective July 1st, 2023, thru June 30th, 2026.
- Hourly: $29.93 – $39.31 (10% Paramedic Premium Included)
- Monthly: $7,262.20 - $9,538.84
- Yearly: $87,146.40 – $114,466.05
- 1:3:2:3 Shift Schedule (Beginning July 1st 2024)
- 15 Kelly days (1 every 8 shifts)
- Medical Expense Reimbursement Plan (MERP) - post-Employment Health Care – Beginning January 1, 2024 – ( Medical Expense Reimbursement Plan (MERP) - Washington State Council of Fire Fighters (wscff.org) )
The City of Salem Fire Department is accepting applications for the position of Entry Level Firefighter/Paramedic. This recruitment will be used to fill up to 20 vacancies and establish an eligibility list for future hires. Salem Fire Department is seeking self-motivated Firefighter/Paramedics to join our organization.
Fire experience is not required, new Paramedics as well as experienced. Firefighter/Paramedics are encouraged to apply. Posted pay rate includes 9% EMT-P additional premium pay per hour.

- Must pass the pre-employment drug test (including marijuana).
- Must pass the pre-employment background check.
- Must pass a competitive testing process including physical fitness testing, oral, written, medical, and psychological assessments, and an extensive background investigation.
- Current certification as an Oregon Paramedic, or National Registry certification as a Paramedic and the ability to qualify for State of Oregon reciprocity, or possession of EMT-P from another state and qualify for State of Oregon reciprocity. Minimum licensure requirements for Oregon Paramedic can be found in the Oregon Revised Statutes and Oregon Administrative Rules.

- NFPA Driver.
- NWCG Wildland Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2) or equivalent.

FireTEAM Written Exam and CPAT Testing
- Submit a City of Salem job application on City's website, attach your resume, five year-court certified driving records obtained from DMV, and current Paramedic certification by the close date.
- Complete the FireTEAM written examination administered by National Testing Network (NTN) test must be taken and completed by the time of submission of the application. Register and take the test . The candidate must indicate Salem Fire Department as a point of application with NTN.
- Complete the CPAT administered by National Testing Network (NTN). This physical agility must be taken and completed by the time of submission of the application. Register and take the CPAT . The candidate must indicate Salem Fire Department as a point of application with NTN.
- Completion of the FireTEAM written examination, CPAT ,EMS Paramedic skills assessment and a panel interview.
- Complete and submit a Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ).You can access the questionnaire through your candidate account on NTN.PHQ must be completed by the time of application.
