SUMMARY: The Counselor is responsible for the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the school counseling programs. The position is responsible for individual, group, and family counseling sessions. It is also responsible for the planning and development of both internal and external referral systems to support the counseling component.
ABOUT CHIEF LESCHI SCHOOLS: Formerly known as the Puyallup Tribal School, Chief Leschi Schools was founded in 1976 to address the high dropout rate of the youth of the Puyallup tribe. It is the largest of seven tribal schools in the state of Washington and one of approximately 200+ tribal schools in the United States. It is also one of the largest tribal schools to be funded by the Bureau of Indian Education.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
- Communicates clearly, both orally and in writing
- Establishes and maintains an effective guidance and counseling program
- Functions as a member of the educational team, including teachers, administrators and other specialists; works with team concerning the educational development of students
- Assists each student with immediate problems and concerns to effect sound decision-making skills
- Provides individual and group counseling for students in the areas of basic education, vocational and personal development
- Provides assistance to staff and students in classroom and total school guidance activities
- Works together and consults with other members of the pupil personnel services team in coordinating services for students
- Assists in communicating the total school program to parents; consults with parents in the areas of basic education, vocational and personal development of their children
- Implements intervention procedures appropriate to situations; utilizes conflict resolution skills as needed
- Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by the building principal, administration, and the law, including any parental contacts or team meetings
- Assists with implementation of state and building assessment plans (i.e. DIBELS, MSP, Smarter Balanced); assists staff and students with the interpretation of test material in order to facilitate maximum individual potential
- Assists building administration in all phases of student scheduling; takes major responsibilities for individual student schedules and maintenance of master schedule
- Facilitates field trips for students to visit colleges and/or universities
- Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district, as well as professional growth activities
- Performs other duties as assigned by administrator

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree from an accredited university, with major course work in counseling, psychology, or other related field
Valid Washington State Counseling Certificate
Two years recent experience in field of counseling
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Two years of experience counseling at the school level
Current or recent experience working with Native Americans or other similar diverse populations
CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:
Successful criminal background clearance
Successful and/or clear drug screening
Must be vaccinated for COVID-19 prior to hire
KNOWLEDGE OF:
School board policies and procedures
Considerable knowledge required in the area of Native American lifestyles.
Demonstrate a thorough understanding of confidentiality and the ability to maintain it.
ABILITY TO:

Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
Synthesize information and present it clearly and in an organized manner
Work with and relate to Native American children
Establish and maintain effective working relationships in a diverse, multicultural environment, to include school staff and administrators, parents and community members

Comply with school board policies and follow administrative procedures

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for long periods of time. The employee must frequently reach with hands and arms and is regularly required to talk or hear; stand and/or walk; bend, stoop, twist, squat, and kneel; and use hands to finger, handle, feel and perform fine motor manipulations. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Anything over the weight limits should be done as a two-person lift or with a mechanical lift.
