EMPLOYMENT STATUS:
Regular, full Time

FLSA STATUS:
Exempt

POSITION SUMMARY:
Assist students, parents and school staff to develop positive learning experiences by providing a comprehensive
guidance program in grades K-4.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Conduct small group counseling sessions to address identified student needs; for example, anger management, social skills, divorce, attention deficit, interpersonal relationships, academic problems.
  • Counsel individual students, focusing, to the extent possible, on school related issues.
  • Take a leadership role in crisis intervention.
  • Communicate and consult with teachers, parents, school support staff and community agencies.
  • Refer families to appropriate community agencies.
  • Integrate guidance learning activities into the regular education curricula, by direct instruction or consultation, as appropriate.
  • Provide orientation activities for students new to the school.
  • Assist with career awareness and career exploration activities.
  • Assist students in transitioning from elementary to intermediate school.
  • Interpret group test results to staff and parents.
  • Assist with the identification of and service to students with special needs.
  • Keep appropriate documentation of conferences, telephone calls and other information important to student welfare.
  • Engage in continuous professional growth, including attending training sessions as assigned. Complete a professional development plan according to procedures adopted by the school district.
  • Use sound judgment, tact and diplomacy when interacting with students, parents and the community, and maintain the confidentiality of information that is not public domain.
  • Serve as a role model in the practice of ethical principles, responsible behavior and democratic values.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Conduct professional development programs for the staff.
  • Provide opportunities for parent education.
  • Participate in a periodic review of the guidance program.
  • Serve on committees in the school district or community as appropriate.
  • Observe all safety and health regulations of the school district.
  • Maintain an appropriate personal appearance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal, the Superintendent or his/her designee(s).
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Three years successful teaching experience.
  • Ohio certificate/license in School Counseling.
  • Alternative to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Board of Education may find appropriate.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Consultative and counseling skills.
  • Familiarity with the administration and interpretation of common group and individual assessment instruments.
  • Thorough knowledge of human development, learning theory, research methods and career development.
  • Basic computer and word processing skills.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Must be available for education related purposes outside the instructional day when requested to do so under reasonable terms.
  • Potential exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue.
  • Occasional operation of a vehicle under inclement weather conditions, that is, being prepared to come to school on all scheduled work days, except calamity days.
  • Some interaction with unruly children.
  • Occasional interaction with angry or distraught adults.
  • Regular requirement to sit, stand, walk, talk, see, hear, read.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Length of Employment: One Year Limited Contract
  • Salary and Fringe Benefits: Based on Current Negotiated Salary and Benefit Schedule
