A Day in the Life

The disbursement clerk's day begins with a review of their cases and pending settlements. The disbursement clerk begins the settlement process on a case by sending balance verification requests to healthcare providers to determine the final balanced owed by the client. The next step is to follow up with providers if we do not receive a response to the balance verification request. After balances are confirmed, the disbursement clerk works with the attorney to determine if we will ask providers to reduce their bills and, if so, send out reduction requests to the providers. At the same time, the disbursement clerk is checking all case costs in the file to ensure we have all costs accounted for. Once all reduction requests and costs are finalized, the disbursement clerk will work with the case managers or paralegals to schedule a time to review the proposed disbursement with the client. The last step is to work with our accounting team to cut checks to all providers and get clients their settlement money. There are additional duties that come up less frequently but are just as important, such as making sure we have costs and balances finalized when a case is scheduled for a settlement conference. Ultimately, the goal of the disbursement clerk is to keep our clients happy by getting settlements completed quickly and accurately.
