Position Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning implements, administers, and maintains the school district's pupil service programs and services in the areas of special education, psychology, guidance, and social work in conformance with district policies and state objectives as well as applicable law to promote a school environment conducive to individualized instruction, cooperative curriculum development and student learning.
Salary Range:
$117,561-$126,294
Requirements:
- Master's degree or higher with emphasis in special education administration.
- Michigan Department of Education approval for Director of Special Education preferred, temporary approval acceptable.
- Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with at least four years of successful teaching in special education
- Three years of administrative experience preferred.
- Evidence of active participation and leadership in professional organizations.
- Superior communication skills in writing and speaking.
- Collaborative leadership skills.
- Such alternatives to the above as the Superintendent or Board of Education finds appropriate and acceptable.
Responsibilities:
Ensures all special education programs and services meet state and federal guidelines.- Consults with staff, parents, and outside agencies.
- Demonstrates continuing awareness of effective instructional techniques and communicates this information to staff.
- Develops effective referral and service systems in support of LRE.
- Evaluates programs and services and implements changes as needed.
- Develops and maintains complete and cumulative individual records of all children receiving special services or enrolled special needs classes.
- Monitors staff caseloads and student progress.
- Conducts or supervisors all IEP's including those for attendance, suspension, etc.
- Coordinates services of Lake Orion students placed out-of-district in center programs.
- Works cooperatively with building administration to ensure quality programs and supervision of building based special education staff.
- Directly supervises itinerant special education and non-certified staff.
- Assists building principal and/or evaluates special education building based staff as indicated.
- Recruits and recommends to human resources office concerning employment of special education staff, both certified and non-certified.
- Ensures staff development activities enhance the effectiveness for programs and services for our students and authorizes participation of staff in such activities.
- Ensures federal, state, county, and local policies are followed.
- Keeps current of related to federal, state and any other rules, laws or legislation affecting the delivery of special education services
- Works closely with quadrant districts, the ISD, parents and the community
- Actively participates with state and county organizations for the improvement of services to students
- District 504 Coordinator
- Submits program documentation for approval, applies for grants, submits budgets and financial reports, prepares and submits program reports to agencies
- Defines problems, collects data, establishes facts and draws conclusions
- Performs other duties as assigned
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Supervises certified and non-certified special education staff
Language and Reasoning Skills:
Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form. Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide, and perform arithmetic operations. Ability to understand, apply and use personal computers and software applications (e.g., Word, Excel). Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals. Ability to report work orally or in writing to others as required. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
Other Skills and Abilities:
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, students, and parents. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form. Ability to perform duties with awareness and in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works inside but will also work outside. The employee must be able to lift over 50 pounds. Supervisor of Building and Grounds will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk while performing this job. The Supervisor is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and repeat the same hand/arm motion many times while performing this job.
The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. Cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud in a classroom setting and may change depending on student activity.
