Launched in 2018, The Movement Cooperative (TMC) is a nonprofit founded with the aim of creating a cooperative community addressing these structural challenges. Currently, our membership stands at nearly 75 national member organizations and 500 state-based organizations covered under our licenses. We leverage the collective purchasing power of our membership to secure cooperatively held data and technology licenses shared across membership and invest in common infrastructure like technical staff to support our members in their work. TMC is a member cooperative - our board is elected by and made up of our member organizations.

Position Overview

The Accounting Manager is responsible for the monthly general ledger close, balance sheet account analysis and maintenance, day-to-day management of accounting activities, and tax reporting. The individual in this role will join a growing accounting and finance team.

Performance Expectations:

  • Understand TMC's cooperative model, business drivers and accounting team policies and procedures.
  • Learn the systems and workflows required to execute responsibilities and quickly gain proficiency in the management of day-to-day accounting activities.
  • Display comfort and ease communicating and/or interacting with members and TMC's affiliate base.
  • Contribute to the development of team goals and own individual OKRs and/or relevant KPIs.

Responsibilities:


Financial Reporting & Controls

  • Prepare and process financial documents and reports such as journal entries, account analysis, cash flow reports, budgets, A/R aging and payments reports.
  • Coordinate and manage details of external service providers, contractors and vendors ensuring accurate recording to the general ledger.
  • Ensure accurate account coding of all transactions. Iidentifyand correct discrepancies, and provide revisions to billing staff in a timely manner.
  • Support customer revenue tracking, creation of forecasts and revenue optimization programs.

Project Management

  • Manage month-end close activity, prepare account reconciliations and internal audits.
  • Support automation projects and implementation of new accounting and finance software.

Member Focus

  • Work closely with account (member) executives, operations, leadership, and clients to assist in research, resolution and development of accounting processes including MOUs and payment disputes.
  • Assist in Accounts Receivable collection efforts where appropriate.

Team Work

  • Participate in periodic meetings with executives and supervisors to represent the Finance Department and discuss accounts receivable,aging and other general ledger reports.
  • Monitor the Billing and A/R inboxes to support billing staff.
  • Support the People & Culture Team with payroll management.

Required skills and competencies

  • Minimum 5+ years of experience as an Accounting Manager or Supervisor, preferably in a non-profit organization.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles, standards, regulations, and best practices.
  • Experience with accounting software packages.
  • Collaborative disposition and experience working in a team environment.
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented with a passion for accuracy.
  • Some familiarity with progressive movements and the advocacy space.
  • Experience with productivity, communications, and project management software, particularly MS Office, Google Apps, AirTable, Slack and Asana.

  • Experience with accounting and CRM software (Sage Intacct/Bill.com).
  • Knowledge of sales tax procedures across jurisdictions.
  • Comfort with a fully remote work environment.

Physical Requirements:

Prolonged periods of working on a computer.

The salary range for this position is $105-115K annually. This is a full-time exempt position.
