The Role:
Suffolk is seeking an experienced Director of Analytics and Data Science to support Suffolk’s analytics and data science initiatives. The Director of Analytics and Data Science will play an integral part in leading the next phase of Suffolk’s analytics journey by extending Suffolk’s usage of predictive and other advanced analytics and growing the Analytics and Data Science Center of Excellence. This role will be pivotal in operationalizing the most urgent analytics initiatives for Suffolk’s digital business initiatives. This role will require both creative and collaborative work with Data Management, Data Visualization, IT, and Suffolk’s wider business. It will involve developing use cases throughout Suffolk and working with the business to refine insights and tools to drive more efficiency and better data-driven decision making.
The role will require a multidisciplinary blend of analytical experience, technical capability, and business strategy. The ideal candidate will have construction industry experience, deep expertise in different analytical techniques, as well as leadership and team building skills to develop and grow a high-performing team. He or she will be excited to work in a dynamic environment and grow in the role as Suffolk continues to “Prove Impossible Wrong.” Specific initiatives will change as we progress on our journey as an analytical leader in the construction industry.
Responsibilities:
Analytics
- Develop the analytics roadmap across multiple lines of business in collaboration with business leaders to unlock insights and capture value.
- Proactively identify areas where analytical efforts can produce a substantial business value add.
- Lead team to conduct the analytics, quality controlling the output and ensuring soundness of recommendation.
- Develop presentations and communicate key findings and make recommendations for business change to leaders across the organization.
- Partner closely with the Data Management CoE to ensure required data is available, curated, and formatted appropriately in the data warehouse or data lake for analytics consumption.
- Serve as project owner on several high-profile deliverables, from concept through launch.
- Act as an analytics consultant to the business, proposing analyses that answers business questions, advising on them on analytical techniques, etc.
Data Science
- As a hands-on leader, deliver actionable insights while prioritizing and managing the workload of data scientists.
- Mine large data sets using sophisticated analytical techniques to generate insights and inform business decisions.
- Identify and test hypotheses, ensuring statistical significance, and build predictive models for business leaders.
- Own and improve standards for machine learning practices (e.g., model selection, accuracy and efficiency).
Team Leadership
- Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with analytic and non-analytic business partners, including executive leadership, to elicit business needs and formulate, propose and refine analytical solutions to drive business value.
- Develop best practices and processes while instilling a culture of innovation and curiosity; training and developing the team’s problem-solving skills, analytical skills, and structured communication skills.
- Manage the demand funnel and prioritization process, communicating clearly to the business expected timelines. Allocate team members based on priority and skill level, strengths, and area of expertise; train, and mentor junior team members.
- A bachelor’s in computer science, statistics, applied mathematics, data science, or a related quantitative field is required; Master’s degree in business analytics, computational science, or real estate preferred.
- Construction Industry experience ideal, ideally across a range of areas, e.g., preconstruction, scheduling, core operations, people, etc.
- Demonstrated experience framing and solving complex businesses problems.
- Ability to clearly and concisely present analytic findings, methodologies and strategic recommendations to senior leaders with varying levels of data literacy.
- Ability to quality control analytical output.
- Proven experience with predictive analytics or data science; experience using R or Python.
- Experience working with cross-functional stakeholders.
- Managerial experience required, with proven ability to guide and grow analytic talent
- Strong verbal/written communication, negotiation, and presentation skills.
- Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills, and ability to work collaboratively in a team atmosphere.
- Skills with BI and analytics tools preferred, but not required, which include Microsoft PowerBI, Tableau, Alteryx, DataRobot, and etc.
- Working knowledge AWS to include the AWS SageMaker suite is a plus.
