POSITION: Entry- Level Development Assistance Engineer

Baxter & Woodman has a rewarding opportunity for a Development Assistance Engineer to work in our growing Water Resources group. We are seeking qualified applicants for our Chicago area offices (Chicago, Mokena or Naperville).

POSITION DUTIES:

  • Provide general municipal engineering services to several clients.
  • Review and approve permit applications for single-family residential, small commercial, and dry utility right-of-way projects.
  • Review development plans for compliance with local requirements, including stormwater management, floodplain management, grading, sanitary sewers, water lines, and transportation aspects.
  • Assist in the review of larger commercial/institutional/industrial developments.
  • Consult with other reviewers regarding electrical, photometric and structural issues and building plans.
  • Assess the need for permits from other agencies.
  • Assess impacts to on-site and adjacent private and public facilities.
  • Provide recommendations for improving on-site or adjacent facilities in conjunction with the development.
  • Work on-site at municipal office(s).
  • Prepare written review reports; communicate with municipal and County staff, permit applicants and designers.
  • Enter review comments into municipal and County online permitting programs.
  • Respond proactively to inquiries from municipal and County Staff, permit applicants, designers and adjacent property owners.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • 4-year B.S. degree in Civil Engineering
  • Excellent technical writing and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to explain technical issues to non-technical municipal staff, property owners and permit applicants.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with permit applicants, designers and outside permit agencies.
  • Ability to travel throughout Northeastern Illinois (own transportation)
  • Ability to work with local government staff and officials.
  • Knowledge of basic principles and experience with stormwater management, water distribution, and wastewater collection systems
  • Knowledge of basic principles and experience with transportation facilities, including parking, roadway design, pedestrian and bicycle facilities, and accessibility requirements
  • Experience in site and subdivision development design and review, and site construction is preferred.
