We are currently seeking a Custodian (Lansing, MI) to work in our Lansing, MI office. This position will work 4:00pm to Mid-night, Flexible schedule.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW (Job Overview):
Clean facilities and work areas including furnishings, bathrooms, fixtures, walls and floors to ensure they meet health and safety standards and present an attractive appearance. Use maintenance supplies, remove waste material, and maintain inventory of tools and supplies. Provide support, development and/or leadership guidance to all volunteers.

Perform all duties and responsibilities in compliance with standard operating procedures and other applicable Federal, State and local regulations.
WHERE YOUR CAREER IS A FORCE GOOD (Key Responsibilities):
1. Clean and sanitize restrooms using established practices and procedures.
2. Clean, dust, and wipe furniture, sweep, mop, or vacuum floors. Empty/clean wastebaskets and trash containers, empty and clean ash trays and cigarettes urns, replace light bulbs, and refill restroom dispensers.
3. Assist with the setup of facilities for meeting, classrooms, conferences, events, etc.
4. Use and maintain assigned power equipment and hand tools, buffers, scrubbers, extractors, high pressure washers and other equipment for the cleaning and general maintenance of floors, walls, carpets, furniture, etc.
5.Recruit, train and work with volunteers and treat all clients, volunteers, guests, and other employees in a courteous and respectful manner at all times while maintaining a cooperative atmosphere for everyone. Work with a volunteer counterpart to ensure key volunteers are utilized and ensure depth within the function.
6. Carry out any additional assignments required to fulfill the Mission of the American Red Cross

Scope: Extensive knowledge of the job. Comprehensive acquaintance with both general and specific aspects of the job and the practical application to complex problems normally encountered. Contact with individuals representing other organizations or individuals of significant importance within organization.
WHAT WILL GIVE YOU THE COMPETITIVE EDGE (Preferred Qualifications ):
Education: High School or equivalent required.

Experience: 1 year of related experience preferred.

Management Experience: N/A

Skills & Abilities: Practical skills and knowledge of building maintenance and material management required. Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communications skills. Ability to work on a team.

Travel: May travel and participate in meetings and conferences.

  • Combination of candidate’s education and general experience satisfies requirements so long as the total years equate to description’s minimum education and general experience years combined (Management experience cannot be substituted).
Physical Requirements: Operational flexibility is required to meet sudden and unpredictable needs. Physical requirements may include the ability to lift up to 50 lbs., squatting, push or pull heavy weights up and down ramps and stairs, good manual dexterity, the ability to sit or stand for long periods of time and adapt to long, irregular hours and frequent schedule changes is required. At the American Red Cross, we conduct many mobile blood drives at businesses, schools and many other locations. All staff work as a team to setup and tear down the equipment required to conduct a mobile blood drive. This involves pushing carts up to 250 lbs., setting up beds and handling many totes containing equipment and snacks for the donors.
