TITLE: HIGH SCHOOL GUIDANCE COUNSELOR
DEPARTMENT: School

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Valid Arizona Dept. of Education School Counselor Certificate is required.
  • Master’s Degree from accredited college or university.
  • Two years verified full-time school counselor experience or three years of verified full-time teaching experience is preferred.
  • Must possess a valid Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card.
JOB GOAL:
The Guidance Counselor performs a variety of jobs to help students overcome problems that impede learning and to assist them in making educational, occupational, and life plans that hold promise for their personal fulfillment.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following tasks are essential for this position. This list is not inclusive of all responsibilities. Individuals may not perform all of these tasks, or may perform similar related tasks not listed.
  • Complies with all HIPAA and FERPA related confidentiality requirements.
  • Develops positive relations with students, parents, school staff and the public.
  • Assists with the development of the school Master Schedule.
  • Assists students in evaluating their aptitude and abilities through interpretation of individual standardized tests, career assessments, and other pertinent data. Works with students in evolving education and occupation plans related to such evaluation.
  • Be available to students so as to provide counseling that will lead to increased growth, self-understanding, and career decision-making.
  • Take an active role in interpreting the school’s objectives to students, parents, and the community.
  • Works with teachers and other staff members to familiarize them with the general range of services offered by the counseling office, and to improve the educational prospects of individual students being counseled.
  • Keeps cumulative files and other records on students.
  • Provide an ongoing system of communication between parent and school so as to keep parents abreast of student successes and failures.
  • Responsible for the development and implementation of a comprehensive system for the development of student centered, individual career plans.
  • Coordinate the development of career awareness and explore activities and courses as part of the career counseling process.
  • Works seamlessly with the Registrar with regard to student enrollment and maintenance of other student records.
  • Develop and deliver presentations and professional development to parents and staff regarding the ECAP program.
  • Assist school staff in interpreting assessment results and recommending appropriate placement/course work.
  • Assist students to develop a complete career portfolio by Graduation.
  • Collaborate and act as liaison to local and state agencies and services.
  • Assists with the collection and dissemination of outcome data and other student records.
  • Participate in the Child Find process.
  • Evaluate, communicate, and support appropriate class scheduling for individual student needs and graduation requirements.
  • Have a basic understanding of a student’s Individual Educational Plan (IEP).
  • Monitor and coordinate the Section 504 Accommodation Plan for eligible students.
  • Trained to participate in the PUSD crisis intervention team.
  • Provide crisis intervention as needed for students and staff.
  • Performs other related duties as directed by the Principal/Assistant Principal.

Knowledge of:
  • District policies, operations and organization.
  • Interpersonal skills including tact, courtesy and diplomacy.
  • Communication (telephone, email, etc.) etiquette.
  • Educational theories and practices.
  • Federal and state laws, rules and regulations governing education.
  • Knowledge of FERPA and HIPAA.
  • District curricula, assessment, and instructional programs.
  • Promoting positive public relations.
  • Technology in the educational context.
  • Utilization of Student Information Systems.
  • Crisis management procedures.
  • Researched-based instructional programs and strategies.
  • District’s constituents (universities, NCAA, military partners, scholarship donors, etc.).
  • Developing and evaluating school programs.
  • Basic computer skills.
Skill and Ability to:
  • Work cooperatively with others.
  • Maintain organized records and files.
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Problem solve at a complex level.

  • May be required to work at a video display terminal for prolonged periods.
REPORTS TO: Principal/Assistant Principal

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the Principal/Assistant Principal in accordance with the provisions of Governing Board policy for evaluation of certified personnel.

TERMS OF
EMPLOYMENT: 10 Months

SALARY: Salary for the position is set according to the Certified Salary Schedule determined by the Governing Board.

FLSA STATUS: Exempt
