Atchison County - Correctional Officer

Department: Sheriff

Reports to: Jail Sergeant; Jail Captain

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Position Summary

This position is a non-exempt position, which takes care of the needs of the inmates in the jail, and is under the supervision of the Jail Captain. The employee is responsible for recording all requests of inmates, medical problems, medications, etc. It is the responsibility of this employee to oversee inmates in a humane manner and grant their constitutional rights. Follows objectives, policies and procedures that are predetermined by Atchison County.

Essential Functions

• Documents activity of incarcerated inmates in the daily log;
• Escorts inmates to and from court hearings, medical appointments, etc.;
• Processes incoming inmates and releases according to law;
• Issues appropriate material and items to inmates;
• Responsible for keeping the jail in an orderly manner by performing cleaning duties;
• Distributes meals and hygiene items to inmates;
• Testifies in court;
• Abides by the law enforcement code of ethics;
• Ability to operate a motor vehicle;
• Answers the telephone and direct calls or messages to the appropriate person;
• Assists citizens with inquiries and complaints;
• Washes laundry;
• Takes out trash;
• Exhibits positive attitude towards position, co-workers, supervisory personnel and members of the general public.

Specialty Requirements

• Possession of valid driver’s license with safe driving record;
• Must be free of any criminal convictions within the past ten years;
• No adult felony convictions.
