Kitchen Assistant/Cook Job Description
Description: Responsible for maintaining full oversight of our food program, including meal preparation from scratch, meal distribution to classrooms, and clean-up while following all food safety and handling requirements. All meals and snacks must be prepared following the food program guidelines.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Helps prepare meals from scratch for each meal to meet correct food portion guidelines for each age group of children.
- Receives inventory, checks quality and quantity, and reports any discrepancies.
- Use thermometers in the process of achieving the proper temperatures for the various food products and check on food products being held to ensure safe temperatures.
- Check temperatures for the coolers and freezer regularly and advise Director if temperature requirements are not being met.
- Must be able to provide substitute meals for children with special dietary requirements.
- Use proper procedures to clean and sanitize all work areas in the kitchen, storage areas, including all equipment, counters, and meal carts.
- Washes dishes and santizes kitchen according to health safety requirments
Required Abilities:
- Must be self-motivated and be able to work in a cooperative manner with other staff members, students, and other church personnel.
- ·Abilities to use the oven, grill, stoves, meat slicer, dishwasher, and other kitchen equipment
- Must have basic mathematical skills and must be able to accomplish accurate recordkeeping and reporting for the food program.
- Ability to work safely around stoves, ovens, and chemicals while having the physical endurance to spend many hours standing, walking, and lifting heavy objects.
- Ability to work in various temperatures from heat and steam from stoves, ovens, and dishwashers.
- Have an optimistic attitude, willingness to learn new skills, a high degree of integrity, and a strong work ethic.
- Ability to substitute meals when needed due to shared space with Immanuel Lutheran Church when needed for weekday funerals.
Qualifications:
- Must be 18 years old or older
- High school diploma or higher is required
- Applicants should have at least one year or more of experience in meal planning and preparation, knowledge of early-childhood nutrition, and experience with working with groups of children.
- Experience using commercial meat slicers, commercial dishwashers, and commercial ovens.
- Successful completion of a criminal background check and fingerprinting.
- Preferred experience with large volume food production, catering, and menu planning
- Must pass ND Childcare licensing background check
Salary:
$15-$18/hour depending on experience
Work hours:
Monday -Friday from 8am -2pm; 25-35 hours per week
