Role Purpose
The Commodities Logistics Manager is responsible for daily support functions essential to managing/tracking approximately 2000 leased hopper cars. This will include daily report generation, updating and maintaining internal Railtrac tool, as well as learning 5 major rail line websites, SAP and Ag Tech for tracing, tracking, and billing cars. This position is also responsible for communicating the railcar situation internally and car needs to the major rail providers, as well as reviewing freight rates, and rail invoices.
The Commodities Logistics Manager is responsible for managing the fleet efficiency, given the changing environment with the railroads. This will be a cross functional position with sales, customer service, transportation, SOP planning, and corn procurement/grain elevator management. Reporting to the Manager, Co Product Sales, with a dotted line to the Director of Grain procurement, also works closely with internal and external stakeholders to ensure that the rail fleet running efficiently.
The ideal candidate could have an interest in co product sales roles or an expanded role in grain procurement/transportation in the future.
MAIN ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Maintain records in internal Railtrac and Ag Tech systems, that will be used as the basis for the daily train and MT hopper reporting, as well as, review, and interpret plant transportation daily reporting for plant position.
- Conduct daily call with co product sales, grain procurement and plant transportation to review any issues or gaps in car counts for the day, or week. Discuss the execution of weekly plan, and any barriers to success.
- Coordinate with Sales, Customer Service, Transportation, Grain procurement, Planning and occasionally other internal functions as needed.
- Review freight rates, and railroad invoices – submit for payment or dispute charges with railroad, as needed
- Track hoppers that are bad ordered with railroad or plant. Formulate plan for repairs, or reclaim, and timeline for completion. Report car counts weekly to plants and transportation for review.
- Manage hopper movements on a daily basis (this will include weekend train management).
- Maintain and report on monthly dashboard key performance indicators for car movement, transit times, and car costs.
- Be an active member in discussions with the railroad during rate negotiation by providing analysis on lanes, activity, and transit times
- Be the super-user for Steelroads, Railtrac, and individual railroad websites, with knowledge of SAP, and Ag Tech to complete the daily reports.
- Support, develop and manage of hopper car reporting tools
- Provide insights and tools to help understand different rail scenarios and ramifications to overall plant and grain hopper car performance.
- Provide historical data and trend analysis to help improve transit times, and hopper car fleet analysis, including bad order cars.
- Establish deep knowledge and understanding of the business transacted using the rail hopper fleet with customer base, including co product, grain, and the plants.
- Manage and maintain hopper fleet car lists, and car leasing details.

- Daily Hopper car reporting accuracy
- Timely and effective execution of assigned work
- Proactive management of Hopper Fleet, including Bad order cars
- Schedule and lead daily calls on Car Counts to ensure teams success
- Active participation in Team meetings
COMPETENCIES
The qualified candidate will be a self-motivated, energetic individual who is highly process oriented and capable of anticipating railcar needs and proactively adjusting to meet those needs for co products, grain, and the plant. Also must be detailed oriented with the ability to work with various other internal and external functions to improve productivity of hopper fleet. This candidate will be able to multi-task. Proficient in Microsoft products.
QUALIFICATIONS
The qualified candidate will have a four-year degree or relevant experience, preferably in ag/business or a related field of study.
The ideal candidate should have an interest in co product sales roles or an expanded role in grain procurement/transportation in the future.
EXPERIENCE
- Three to five years of experience in logistics, customer service or similar commercial functions.
- Experience with SAP, Railtrac and Ag Tech processes is preferred.
- Previous logistics and agriculture experience is appreciated, but not required.
SKILLS / KNOWLEDGE
- Analytical data mining skills
- Knowledge of hopper car movements for co products and grain.
- Experience with SAP, Railtrac, Ag Tech
- Experience with Microsoft products, specifically Excel, and Office
- Attention to detail.
- Problem solving skills.
