Facility name: Gregory S. Coleman Unit / Kyle Correctional Center

*** This position splits time between both facilities

Location: 1400 Industrial Blvd, Lockhart, TX 78644; 23001 Interstate 35, Kyle, TX 78640

Pay: Starting at $17.00 per hour

Work schedule: Full-time; 8 hour days

Position summary: The chief of unit classification is responsible for the management of classification, which includes case management and reception/discharge procedures in compliance with Management & Training Corporation (MTC) and Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) directives. This individual directly supervises the records clerk and count room clerk.

Essential functions:

  • Serve as the unit classification committee chairperson; schedule appropriate unit personnel to participate in committee; monitor the committee documentation to ensure in is within policy; schedule offenders to appear before the committee for assignment of appropriate custody levels, housing and work assignment, protection and safekeeping.
  • Provide staff training, evaluate staff performance and recommend and implement department and personnel changes as approved by the major, programs and coordinated with the human resources supervisor prior to implementation.
  • Review housing and job assignments or changes in relation to medical restrictions or security needs including Security Threat Group (STG) of the offender.
  • Maintain up-to-date and accurate reports for submission in a timely manner as required.
  • Review that unit orientation is completed and all required contents are addressed within the required timeframe.
  • Ensure the heat restriction roster is printed daily and given to security. Ensure all staff have read and are familiar with the directive.
  • Responsible for offender grievance responses concerning classification matters.
  • Maintain offender job description for every offender job within the facility.
  • Conduct self-audits and maintain documentation to meet ACA and contractual requirements.
  • Oversee count room activity.
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of offender files and ensure files are transferred or scanned and monitored in accordance to policy.

Minimum requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is necessary. Major course work in a Behavioral Science, Criminal Justice, or a related field preferred. Each year of experience as described below in excess of the required three years may be substituted for thirty semester hours from an accredited college or university on a year-for-year basis.
  • Three years full-time, wage-earning correctional custody, law enforcement, offender case management or correctional unit operations experience.
  • One (1) year full-time, wage-earning offender classification experience required.
  • A valid driver license in the state of Texas with an acceptable driving record required, unless waived by management.
