Job description
Reporting to the Chief Scientific Officer and serving as a member of the President and Chief Executive Officer's senior leadership team, the Chief Data Science Officer will accelerating advancements in human health by connecting the scientific and biomedical communities with the largest collection of mouse strains, genetic and genomic data in the world.
- Designing and launching the new JAX Global Data Sciences Institute on a new JAX campus and building a new JAX data sciences team;
- Creating new data sciences capabilities within JAX by envisioning and executing strategies to improve the research and discovery enterprise and inform institutional decision-making;
- Leading the development of big data capabilities and utilization, as well as the coordination of cross-functional analytic initiatives;
- Collaborating closely with the Laboratory’s faculty;
- Innovating the efforts to identify additional value through the utilization of the Laboratory’s data assets and analytics;
- Educating the organization and the scientific community on the power and potential of data sciences by communicating the vision and use cases of advanced analytics;
- Managing relationships with external data and analytics partners, including academia, biotech, venture capital, and pharma, and playing a leading role in the development and design of the vision, capabilities, infrastructure, and roadmap for the launch of data sciences capabilities;
- Building the Laboratory’s data science talent through role definition, recruitment, and development of a team of data scientists that will jointly move the data science initiatives forward; and,
- Working closely with support and service teams, inclusive of data analytics, data warehousing, and data engineering teams in creating big data applications through the utilization of structured and unstructured data, designing optimal data architecture, and experimenting on new machine learning techniques.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- A Ph.D., M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degree with a strong data science or informatics research background;
- Expertise in genomic-based or imaging-based machine learning research;
- Familiarity in biomedical and bioinformatic data;
- Ability to evangelize the broader vision to internal and external parties;
- A hands-on orientation and willingness and ability to be intimately involved in the day-to-day scientific and partnership activities of JAX;
- A significant network of leaders in academia, biomedical research, and industry for recruiting, partnerships and collaborations;
- Team building and recruiting experience to grow a nascent enterprise into a key part of an organization; and,
- The ability to create a network of trusted partners for data-based collaborations that honor the interests of all parties.
- Deep internationally recognized expertise in data science and data science methods, particularly machine learning, and computational data science tools;
- Experience designing and launching innovative, transformational new programs;
- Demonstrated experience in utilizing novel methods to integrate otherwise disparate datasets;
- A recognized understanding of the current state of the art and competitive landscape in data science, and how to recruit, build and sustain scientists in the area;
- Strong entrepreneurial leadership and a track record of hiring, managing, and developing scientific and managerial talent;
- A deep understanding of data governance and architecture;
- Demonstrated decisiveness, creativity, and pronounced collaborative leadership abilities;
- Minimum of ten years progressive and relevant work experience in data science or informatics innovation, and translational research processes.
