Job Duties

The mission of the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (OhioMHAS) is to provide statewide leadership of a high-quality mental health and addiction prevention, treatment and recovery system that is effective and valued by all Ohioans.
Under general supervision, a Certified Peer Supporter provides direct services and assists patients to function independently in self-help and daily living skills.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Assists in the implementation of the facility's Client Rights Specialist;


  • coordinates programs with other Peers, clinical & administrative department heads;
  • makes recommendations in policy/procedure matters related to recovery & patient rights;
  • reviews pertinent incidents, provides input in establishing facility policies involving personal & legal rights of persons being served;
  • collaborates & works cooperatively with clinical managers;
  • Provides monthly reports;
  • assures recovery, rights, complaint, grievance & mediation procedures to persons being served, their families & interested others (e.g., case managers, attorneys, guardians);
  • assures all mandated written materials; insures new persons being served are visited within 1 working day of admission to explain client rights & grievance procedure with follow-up as needed;
  • documents explanations in accordance with departmental policy;
  • receives & investigates inquiries, complaints & grievances from concerned others;
  • work with staff & concerned others regarding inquiries & complaints;
  • suggests resolutions;
  • contacts & obtains external legal & other expert assistance ,
  • files & facilitates grievances; submits resolutions to CEO, OhioMHAS & Client Rights Office;
  • organizes meetings that facilitate patient representatives to express their concerns; follows up to ensure problems are corrected or ameliorated;
Coordinates the hospital's Care Calls to former patients
  • to determine needs & possible follow-up;
  • liaise between internal & external staff or organization to resolve issues;
  • maintain database of care call contacts & outcomes.
Maintains necessary files & records to document
  • financial & advocacy activities;
  • keeps files of complaints, grievances, reports, meeting minutes, correspondence,
  • TVBH directives, risk management data;
  • prepares required statistical reports of the advocacy department.
Participates as a member of appropriate committees (e.g., safety, restraint & seclusion, etc.); attends training sessions & seminars as assigned
  • reads professional publications;
  • reviews all new information on changes in laws relating to payee matters, Client Rights & advanced directives in order to keep programs, techniques & procedures current & up-to-date;
  • responsible for imparting this knowledge to staff, clients, families & the community by giving talks/lectures; provides written materials, as needed.
Qualifications
Requires current certification as Peer Recovery Supporter in accordance with OAC 5122.29.15.
Knowledge of standards for resident care; patient rights within a regional psychiatric hospital*. Skill in deescalating situations involving individual’s physical arousal. Ability to relate to individual’s problems and redirect to positive responses; recognize behavioral problems and symptoms related to abnormal mental health and take appropriate actions; deal with problems involving several variables within familiar context; cooperate with co-workers; develop good rapport with residents.

Unusual working conditions:

May work weekends and holidays; may be exposed to communicable diseases and unpredictable patient behavior.

All employees of TVBH are required, as a condition of their continued employment, to maintain annual flu vaccinations or have an approved exemption on file. If you are selected to fill this position, you will need to provide your vaccination information or seek approval for an exemption.

The final candidate selected for the position will be required to provide proof of Covid-19 vaccination in accordance with federal regulation Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Final Interim Rule 2021-23831 and 42 CFR 483.80 and 42 CFR 483.430(f), State of Ohio Administrative Policy HR-52, and OhioMHAS Policy HR-03.
