Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant (COTA)

Job Summary: Certified Occupational Therapy assistants are health care professionals specializing in scientific bases and a holistic perspective to promote a person's ability to fulfill their daily routines and roles. They enable individuals across the lifespan by optimizing their abilities to perform activities that are meaningful to them. Human occupations include activities of daily living, work/vocation, play, education, leisure, rest and sleep, and social participation. The Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant will provide treatment to assigned patients, and help patients reach maximum performance level and to use skills learned to the fullest to function in the community within the limits of their capabilities.

Duties/Responsibilities:

• Records patients’ progress and modifies the plan of care if needed

• Educates patients and family members about the recovery/developmental process

• Works collaboratively with professionals from many other disciplines

• Provides consultation in areas such as environmental design, adaptive equipment, proper positioning of patients to prevent contractures and splinting

• Maintains timely and accurate patient records and reports

• Uses therapeutic exercises and activities to improve or maintain strength, range of motion, and fine-motor coordination

• Instructs patients in adapted techniques and the use of adaptive equipment for meal preparation, home management, dressing, feeding, and other self-care skills

• Trains patients in the use of upper-extremity prosthetic devices to resume previous daily routines

• Provides prevention therapy to maintain functional skills; instructs patients in energy conservation, joint protection, safety techniques for sensory loss, and transferring and visual field deficits; instructs patients' families in personal care for patients, especially proper transfer techniques to avoid back strain

• Administers prevocational programs to prepare patients to return to or enter a work or school setting

• Designs home programs and instructs patients or families in carrying out such programs

Required Skills/Abilities:

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills

• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

• Ability to use tools used to make adaptive equipment

• Knowledge and skills to care for the physical and developmental needs of the population age groups that will be receiving services

• Ability to remain calm in emergency or crisis situations

Qualifications/Education/Experience:

• Associates/Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Therapy required.

• Active state license as Occupational Therapy Assistant.

• One year of experience preferred, but not required

Physical Requirements:

• Will engage in movements that involve lifting equipment used in patient care, etc.

• May be exposed to infectious diseases and human waste products

• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. at times

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $26.00 - $29.00 per hour
