Job Summary:
The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) will serve as a key member of the patient care team in an ambulatory setting. The CMA will work closely with providers across multiple specialties as well as with other clinical and administrative staff to deliver an exceptional patient experience that contributes to positive health outcomes for patients and a work culture of kindness, inclusion, integrity, accountability, and excellence.
Job Requirements:
- Greet and interact with patients, visitors, vendors, and all faculty and staff in a courteous, helpful, professional and ethical manner.
- Prepare patients for their visit including: pre-visit organization of information required for an efficient in-office experience, performing patient escort and rooming functions (taking vital signs, medication. reconciliation, accurate documentation of chief complaint, updating history as requested, updating health maintenance items as requested), providing instructions to patients in a manner that facilitates efficient patient safety and standard operations for the practice. Assists patients as needed with walking, transferring, dressing, collecting and processing specimens and point of care testing, preparing for exam, etc.
- Support Front Desk staff to expedite the delivery of quality patient care, provide an excellent patient experience and promote patient flow.
- Drive awareness of pre and post visit processes and self-services in place to minimize density and unnecessary patient-staff contact.
- Perform additional check out functions such as scheduling, referrals and additional tasks as needed.
- Anticipate and fulfill patient, visitor, provider, and colleague needs within scope of practice/training/education.
- Perform venipuncture as requested and accurately prepare and label specimens per organizational and laboratory guidelines.
- Collect and label nasopharyngeal specimens for testing as trained.
- Perform EKGs and/or spirometry as requested.
- Enter accurate charges into the EHR.
- Assist providers or other clinical staff with in-office procedures as requested.
- Serve as a chaperone in the exam room as requested.
- Obtain prior authorizations for medications as requested.
- Maintain diagnostic equipment, perform QC testing and maintain supporting documentation.
- Perform point of care testing as trained.
- Maintain daily refrigerator/freezer logs, monthly AED log and other QA logs as trained.
- Contribute ideas for improving practice workflows to team members, providers, and management.
- Take initiative to resolve patient safety and patient experience concerns within scope or practice/ training/education.
- Follow and adhere to Infection Prevention & Control guidelines as appropriate.
- Create an environment of safety by utilizing practice standards.
- Ensures overall condition of treatment room is clean and safe according to practice standards. Escalates any issues to Environmental Services, Engineering, Central Sterile, Materials Management, etc. and ensures follow through.
- Ensures inventory and adequate supply of personal protective equipment and other hygiene products in patient treatment area. Notifies management when supplies are low and need re-stocking.
- Ensure all equipment/utensils/instruments are cleaned and sterilized after use on a daily basis.
- Lift buckets of speculums and carry them to the cleaning room, up to 20 pounds.
- Lift boxes of supplies and transport them to the appropriate storage space, up to 30 pounds.
- Set up and break down procedure rooms.
- Assist physician with fertility-related procedures such as oocyte retrievals.
- Provide chaperone duties as required by the Department’s Chaperone Policy
- Employee must comply with all patient privacy and confidentiality according to HIPAA at all times. This includes completion of all required trainings.
- Keep current on all organizational, practice, and patient privacy policies (e.g. infection control, HIPAA) and required trainings.
- Maintain a safe and secure work environment by following all OSHA, EH&S and public safety policies and guidelines.
- Other duties as assigned within professional scope of practice/training/education.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school graduate or equivalency and graduated from an accredited Medical Assistant program.
- CMA or equivalency required.
- Current BCLS/AED certification required.
- Must demonstrate strong organizational and problem solving skills. Ability to perform across multi-disciplinary and/or specialties while maintaining high productivity and a professional and service-oriented demeanor.
- Ability to work collaboratively with a culturally diverse staff and patient/family population demonstrating tact, respect, and sensitivity.
- Must have excellent communication skills, interpersonal skills, and strong ability to deescalate stressful situations.
- Must be an engaged team member demonstrating collaboration, inclusion, reliability, punctuality, and adaptability to new and changing situations.
- Basic proficiency in computer skills including, but not limited to, Electronic Health Systems, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Email systems, etc.
- Must be a motivated individual with a positive mindset and exceptional work ethic.
- Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time.
- Ability to bend and stoop using good body mechanics.
- Ability to safely lift and carry up to 30 lbs. on occasion.
- Regular exposure to blood and body fluids, communicable disease and other conditions common to a clinical work environment.
- Will provide coverage as requested throughout OBGYN practices (multiple sites and flexible schedule). Must be able to work evenings and weekends as required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associates Degree or additional academic coursework is preferred.
- Previous medical assisting experience in an outpatient setting preferred.
- Proficiency of OSHA standards including disposal of biohazard waste is preferred.
- Preferred multi-specialty experience in a high volume setting preferred.
- Prior EMR experience, EPIC preferred.
