Cardiosonographer- Mercy Anderson Hospital Full Time 730am-4pm

The Registered Echo is a credentialed health professional through the ARDMS who, under the direction of the Medical Director of Cardiac, is committed to applying the art and skill of diagnostic imaging through the safe and effective use of diagnostic ultrasound in their performance of noninvasive cardiovascular examinations. Responsibilities include direct patient care provided in a compassionate and timely manner. The sonographer’s growth and development are maintained through ongoing medical and technical education and research and ultimately contributes to the delivery of quality patient care.

Job

Participates in the co-ordination and delivery of services to inpatients and outpatients.
Verifies orders, reviews the patient electronic medical record to obtain a history of symptoms in order to validate indications for testing, explains procedure to patient, and ensures patient privacy and comfort.


Performs echocardiogram procedures in accordance with department procedures. This includes 2 dimensional /3-dimensional imaging of the heart and cardiac valves, large vessels; M mode, PW & CW Doppler; and color flow. The cardio-sonographer will assist cardiologist with TEE (transesophageal echocardiograms) and cardiac stress echocardiograms.


Prepares preliminary reports for review and interpretation by reading physician.
Performs daily order verification and charge capture.
Adheres to the standards of the National Patient Safety Goals.

QUALITY Participates in quality improvement activities; evaluates procedure results for technical quality and accuracy. Review department performance in relation to established goals, implementing changes to affect outcomes.

  • Performs an appropriate number of procedures in a reasonable amount of time. Uses time wisely for efficient department operation.

PATIENT CARE/EVALUATION OF EXAM
  • Interacts positively with patients/families, co-workers, and physicians
  • Provides information to patients to reduce anxiety and promote comfort.
  • Orients patients to test procedures.
  • Interacts and works under the direction of multiple physicians
  • Provides manager with timely information.

EDUCATION • Graduate of a 2-year Allied Health Program with 12 months full-time clinical experience performing noninvasive vascular exams
  • Graduate of an approved Diagnostic Ultrasound Program
  • Must be registered or registry eligible through ARDMS.
  • Current CPR certification

BODY SUBSTANCE ISOLATION
  • Follows all body substance isolation policies related to imaging procedures e.g., wear gloves, mask, and shoe covers.

CLERICAL DUTIES
  • Demonstrates competent use of a variety of computer functions.
  • Enters data electronic medical record.
  • Performs clerical duties as needed.
  • Enters appropriate procedure charges.
  • Enters appropriate data into CPACS.

CLEANLINESS/SUPPLIES
  • Operates equipment necessary to perform all required procedures and to obtain optimal diagnostic images.
  • Maintains equipment in good working order, performing routine cleaning, preventive maintenance, and report any equipment malfunction to management. Performs daily minor maintenance on imaging and non-imaging equipment; including surface cleaning and disinfecting transducers.
  • Operates equipment necessary to perform all required procedures and to obtain optimal diagnostic images.
  • Assumes responsibility for inventory in assigned area and replenishes par supply level.
  • Reports low stock items to supervisor.

PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT
  • Demonstrates knowledge of performance improvement goals and objectives.
  • Participates in cardiovascular performance improvement projects.
  • Assists in acquisition of performance improvement data.
  • Offers suggestions related to continuing improvement.

CONTINUING EDUCATION
  • Attends annual mandatory hospital in-services.
  • Attends/participates in department in-services.
  • Completes annual mandatory educational requirements.
  • Attends area / regional conferences ensuring continuing education and professional growth.
  • Maintains competency and maintains active registry status by acquiring 30 CMEs per 3 year rolling triennium
  • Adheres to standards of the IAC and assists manager in data collection for accreditation process.

EDUCATION OF NEW STAFF/STUDENTS
  • Assist in the orientation of new staff or cross training staff in noninvasive cardiovascular ultrasound techniques, and procedures.
  • Supervises and evaluates students as part of their clinical education.
  • Directly supervises any portion of an examination performed by students.

OTHER DUTIES
  • Performs other duties that assist in the smooth performance of the department.
  • Responds to changes in department needs, e.g., scheduling.
  • Accepts additional responsibilities to improve department performance, e.g., committee member or departmental special projects.
