Job Summary:
KCS is a capital-intensive industry and this position is responsible for management of the full life cycle accounting (e.g., construction costs, in-servicing, depreciation, retirement) for KCS’ leased and owned assets. This role would review and propose proper accounting treatment for sophisticated asset additions and retirements and monitor processing of additions/retirements to ensure alignment with policies and timeliness of recording. This position also accounts and reports for all leases according with the lease accounting standard.
Job Duties:
- Supports alignment with and execution of the overall department and Company objectives
- Maintains the accounting and related ERP systems for property and leased assets, which includes the timely processing of asset additions/retirements and understanding aspects of reconciliation between the systems
- Responsibilities include the month-end closing of the Property and Lease sub ledger including validation of system generated journal entries, preparation of monthly internal reporting to support the financial statements, and reconciliation of balance sheet accounts.
- Completes and documents appropriate controls throughout the business process
- Assists with various other technical accounting and/or audit requests (evaluation of capital and lease transactions, asset impairment review, ARO, etc.)
- Provides timely and accurate reporting of accounting transactions and balances for quarterly and annual SEC and regulatory filings (e.g., 10-Q, 10-K, R-1).
- Provides constructive coaching and feedback to staff in the US and Mexico as well as continues to develop staff and provides them with meaningful opportunities.
- Identifies process improvement opportunities. Proposes and implements solutions.
- Provides support to internal/external auditors and Tax
- Partners with multiple cross-functional teams to support business requirements

Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree - Accounting, Finance or related field;
- 7 years Accounting experience;
- or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Certification Requirements:
- CPA
Preferred Requirements:
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel preferred.
- SAP Project Systems or Materials Management modules experience preferred.
- Knowledge of group depreciation preferred.
- PowerPlan experience preferred.
- Bilingual preferred (Spanish)
Essential Functions:
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel preferred. Ability to read and interpret technical journals, financial reports, and legal document.
- Ability to communicate effectively before groups of (internal) customers or employees of an organization including written and verbal communication
- Mathematical Abilities
- Ability to take care of problems involving both routine and non-routine situations
- Project management skills with attention to detail and ability to deliver on time
Working Conditions
- This position has a regular full time schedule with a normal work week of Monday through Friday. There may be a need for occasional work after hours or weekends.
- This position may require minimal travel up to 10% of the time.
- Strong excel skills and communication skills.
- Able to manage competing tasks in compliance with company policies.
