Description

Performs responsible work transporting clients to and from Center for Active Aging, medically related appointments, social service agencies, parks and recreation programs and special events. Operates a bus to transport participants. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Transportation Manager and performance is reviewed while in progress, through conferences reviewed for quality of service rendered to clients.

Salary Range $16.90 - $21.55

• Transports participants to and from the Center for Active Aging, to medically related appointments, social service agencies, special events, and other designated destinations.
• Transports participants to and from City-wide special events and parks and recreation programs.
• Operate various transportation vehicles, including 12-25 passenger accessible buses and a large activity bus.
• Assists participants with entering and exiting the bus, and with wheelchairs and walkers.
• Follows established city rules and regulations related to operation use of bus.
• Provides reports on routing, passengers, maintenance, and mileage.
• Cleans interior and exterior of vehicles daily.
• Inspects bus daily for any damages.
• Checks bus engine for issues.
• Assists staff members as requested.
• Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or equivalent and at least 3-years of experience in driving some form of public transportation; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Excellent communication skills and empathy for elderly people and individuals with dementia.

Required Qualifications:
Minimum of 3-years valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class A or B with Passenger (P) endorsement and safe driving record. “S” School Bus endorsement preferred. Chauffer’s License required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• 
  Knowledge of light automotive equipment operating principles and common hazards and safety precautions necessary for equipment operation.
• Ability to operate a 78-passenger school bus.
• Knowledge of street and highway routes.
• Skill in the operation of light automotive equipment.
• Ability to establish effective relationships with senior citizens, the general public and other City employees and to understand written and oral instructions.

Physical Demands
The physical demands involve balancing, crawling, crouching, depth perception, driving, far acuity, grasping, hearing, kneeling, lifting, near acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, seeing, standing, stooping, talking, and walking. May be required to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects.

Work Environment
The worker is subject to inside environmental conditions: protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperamental changes (i.e. warehouses, covered loading docks, garages, etc). The worker is subject to outside environmental conditions: no effective protection from the weather. The worker is subject to extreme heat: temperatures above 100 degrees for periods of more than one hour. The worker is subject to atmospheric conditions: one or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system or the skin: fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases or poor ventilation. The employee works in a dynamic environment that requires them to be sensitive to change and responsive to changing goals, priorities, and needs.

Work Hours: Hours and shifts will vary from Monday-Saturday (holiday and special event as assigned)

Note: During emergency conditions, all City employees are automatically considered emergency service workers. City employees are subject to being called to work in the event of a disaster, such as hurricane, or other emergency situations and are expected to perform emergency service duties as assigned.
