The Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) protects and promotes the safety and well-being of New York City’s children and families by providing child welfare, juvenile justice, and early care services. In juvenile justice, ACS manages and funds services including detention and placement, intensive community-based alternatives for youth, and support services for families.

The selected candidate will be responsible for performing the following duties, but not limited to:
  • Communicate with facility directors and managers to determine their painting requirements and help make the best decisions for their projects.
  • Assemble scaffolding as required.
  • Cover trim, floors, furniture and other surfaces with masking tape, drop cloths and other protective coverings to keep them free of paint.
  • Set up ventilators and other safety equipment to protect Painters from unhealthy fumes.
  • Prepare surfaces to be painted by washing them, filling holes and cracks with putty and sanding them until they’re smooth.
  • Apply primer and other sealers to paint surfaces to ensure that paint sticks to them.
  • Mix and match paint, stain and other finishes to job specifications.
  • Apply paint, stain and other finishes to paint surfaces using paintbrushes, rollers or sprayers.
  • Maintain an inventory of supplies like paint brushes, rollers and tarps.
  • Remove old finish using scrapers, chemical compounds or blowtorches.
  • Estimate time and material costs on painting projects.
  • Clean machines, equipment and work areas using water, solvents and other cleaning aids.
  • Review and implement work orders and assignments.
  • Remove and reinstall fixtures (e.g., doorknobs, electric switch covers) as necessary.
  • Collaborate with the Programming team to demonstrate techniques to youth in Detention interested in field of painting.
  • Follow safeguards, rules and regulations.

Note: Position is based out of Horizon Juvenile Center in the Bronx but may be required to occasionally travel to Crossroads Juvenile Center in Brooklyn to provide painting.

Minimum Qual Requirements

1. Five years of full-time satisfactory experience as a painter acquired within the last fifteen years; or
2. At least three years of full-time satisfactory experience as a painter acquired within the last fifteen years and sufficient full-time satisfactory apprentice painter experience to make up a total of five years of acceptable experience. Six months of acceptable experience will be credited for each year of apprentice painter experience.
