Job description
Battery System Modeling Engineer
Primary Purpose:
Provide technical modeling and simulation leadership as needed to design, develop, and support low voltage Li-Ion battery systems for vehicle OEMs. Particular emphasis will be placed on design for mechanical robustness and thermal performance of Li-Ion battery packs.
This position also requires close collaboration with battery system engineers on conceptual development of battery systems.
Primary Duties:
-
Provide expert thermal management system designs and guidance to facilitate the development of Li-Ion battery cells and battery packs. Provide and/or supervise CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) and thermal simulations to predict the performance of the temperature distribution within the cells and battery systems and establish operating ranges and key design parameters. Optimize the system design to balance cost, performance, mass, volume and thermal efficiency
-
Provide expert knowledge for defining and executing FEA simulations to validate battery design concepts regarding mechanical robustness
-
Provide technical guidance to designers, engineers, suppliers, and support personnel as needed
-
Generate test plans (DVP&R) for thermal, mechanical and durability related requirements. Ensure that designs meet expected functions and failure modes in the full validation of components and battery systems
-
Assist in the assembly and test of battery systems or prototypes for low volume programs or experiments
-
Manage engineering documentation to ensure a sensible archive of information including engineering calculations, engineering drawings, intellectual property, DFMEAs (Design Failure Mode Effects Analysis), validation reports, meeting minutes, trip reports, supplier evaluations, and customer documents/communication
-
Design for manufacturability (DFM) to ensure that the design of all components, and battery systems optimizes the manufacturing process at the battery system assembly, and vehicle level assembly. Ensure that the design of all components facilities handling throughout the product life cycle from shipping through disassembly and recycling
Job Specifications:
-
MS in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or relevant to position description from an accredited four-year university. PhD degree is desirable
-
Thermal & Mechanical Modeling and simulation skills - 3+ years of experience in thermal and mechanical system design and FEA and CFD simulation is required, specifically experience with ANSYS and StarCCM+ tools
-
3+ years of experience in selection and characterization of thermal materials
-
3+ years CAD (SolidWorks) professional capability
-
3++ years MatLab Experience desirable
-
FEA experience for crash, crush, mechanical shock and vibration analysis desirable
-
Experience with Li-Ion battery systems is desired, specifically regarding thermal management and mechanical design
-
