Job Summary

Battery simulation engineer is responsibilities to develop and maintain the first-principles physics-based battery electrochemical models, work with internal multi-functional teams to develop electrochemical models to support design of advanced algorithms for battery management systems, to simulate cell performance under a wide range of loads, operating conditions, and aging mechanisms, and to validate the models to high levels of confidence.

This job is based at ONE’s headquarters in Novi, MI.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop high fidelity cell models using first-principles physics-based and/or data-driven empirical methodologies.
  • Develop reduced-order models for battery pack thermal, electrical and life simulations and for the use in advanced close-loop state estimation algorithms.
  • Support development of fast charge algorithms in products while handling aging of batteries
  • Work with cell engineers to develop electrochemical characterization and cell test plans for model parametrization and validation.
  • Work with BMS Algorithms Engineers on test data processing, model parameters identification and optimization, and model validation.
  • Implement developed models in Matlab/Simulink as plant models for BMS algorithms MIL/SIL/HIL validations.
  • Act as technical contact point for electrochemical characterization, mathematical modeling, software, techniques, and applications.
  • Perform design tradeoff analysis to optimize cell geometry, active material selection, BOM cost, rate, and operating conditions to achieve design targets.
  • Participate in benchmarking activities.
  • Perform any additional duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • S. degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical Engineering, PhD is preferred.
  • Three years or more experience in physics-based modeling of electrochemical, thermal, fluid, or chemical transport systems.
  • Expert in electrochemical simulations with commercial software packages, such as COMSOL, GT, Siemens Battery Design Studio, or AVL/BATEMO.
  • Strong fundamental knowledge on lithium-ion battery chemistry, electrochemical and thermal processes, and aging mechanisms.
  • Strong mathematic skills in numerical methods of solving PDEs and ODEs, numerical optimization, and control theories.
  • Strong working knowledge of MATLAB and Simulink
  • Experience of embedded control algorithms and software development for automotive battery systems preferred.
  • Proven ability to take initiative and be innovative.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision; take proactive role in executing assignments in a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize workload based on changing needs.

Work Schedule

  • Full-time 40 hours and generally scheduled Monday through Friday 8am-5pm EST
  • Work schedule to be established with supervisor to ensure Company’s client and business needs are met
  • Flexible work schedule and environment, see company policy if applicable

Experience

Required
  • 3 year(s): M.S. degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical Engineering, PhD is preferred. Three years or more experience in physics-based modeling of electrochemical, thermal, fluid, or chemical transport systems

Education

  • Masters or better in Engineering or related field
