Job Summary/Basic Function
The Auto Mechanic will maintain and repair University cars, vans, trucks, tractors, small engines. Service includes rebuilding components, diagnosing problems, routine and preventive maintenance on diesel engines and components, performs inspections and emissions testing, service, and repair emergency generators, assist in emergency road services work on vehicles and equipment.

Annual Salary Range: $37,144.00 plus comprehensive benefits starting on the first day of employment, including:
  • Health insurance – Low bi-weekly premium. Employees pay 5% of bi-weekly salary for benefit coverage with ability to pay 2.5% when participating in the wellness program.
  • Dental insurance – Coverage is free to employee and dependents after 90 days
  • Vision insurance – Coverage is free to employee and dependents after 90 days.
  • Group life insurance – equal to annual salary (up to $40,000.00) at no cost to the employee
  • Retirement – 2 plans to choose from

Required Qualifications
  • Four years of experience in automotive mechanic trade OR completion of approved apprenticeship OR any combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Knowledge of: automotive vehicles, equipment, and parts; and the standard practices of the automotive mechanic trade, the methods, materials, and tools used by journey-level automotive mechanics, the assembly and operation of the internal combustion engine, State inspection rules and regulations and the hazardous materials and safety precautions used in the automotive mechanic trade.
  • Skill in: locating and correcting defects in automotive vehicles, equipment, and parts and the care and use of tools and equipment used in repairing and maintaining automotive vehicles, equipment, and parts.
  • Ability to: learn the operation of computer diagnostic equipment, learn to operate a personal computer and resident software to prepare required reports, understand and carry out written and oral instructions, prepare records and reports on automotive repair and maintenance and operate a motor vehicle.
  • Must obtain the following within six months of employment:
    • CDL license.
    • PA Certified Inspection Mechanic for Class 7 vehicles.
  • Excellent customer service, oral, written, interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
  • Evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Successful interview.
  • Successful completion of three background checks.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in a facility maintenance department.
  • Experience working in a higher education environment.
  • Experience using snow moving equipment.

Job Description
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair problems on vehicles and equipment.
  • Perform the inspections and emission testing per Commonwealth of Pennsylvania regulations. Minimal Class B Commercial Driver’s License is required.
  • Repair and replace shock absorbers, transmissions, brakes, and all parts of automobile equipment.
  • Balance wheels & check for proper alignment; make minor body repairs.
  • Repair hydraulic systems on construction equipment.
  • Perform repairs and preventive maintenance on small engines, 2 cycle and 4 cycle engines, turf, and mowing equipment.
  • Service all filters on diesel engines; replace water pumps, gaskets, and other parts; repair the electrical system; and perform all other repairs, as necessary.
  • Perform emergency road service, including any necessary on-site repair work.
  • Maintain the University’s vehicles in a safe and clean condition. This may require washing and detailing the vehicles.
  • Conduct monthly emergency generator tests. Troubleshoot, diagnose, and make the necessary repairs.
  • Knowledgeable in the proper use of a variety of hand tools, garage equipment and standard practices of the automotive trade.
  • Prepare records and reports on work accomplished.
  • Obtains estimates of damaged vehicles and arranges for repairs at local garages and repair shops, as necessary.
  • Orders and obtains parts and supplies as needed.
  • All other duties as assigned.


Safety:
  • Work safely by using Personal Protective Equipment, maintaining equipment, following safety procedures and policies, etc.
  • Complete required safety training. Stay current on safety measures for trade.
  • Identify and report safety issues related to equipment, actions, or processes.
  • Immediately report accidents and incidents to include near misses.
  • If injured during work, report incident to your supervisor and complete the accident form.
  • Review SDS for chemicals related to the department.
  • Leave work area clean and orderly at the end of shift and/or job
  • Resolve pending hazards in a timely fashion.
  • Cooperate with safety investigations and audits.

Essential Functions
  • Work is normally performed in an indoor work environment but occasional outside work will be required year-round.
  • Will encounter presence of dust, odors, debris, hot components/equipment, chemicals, and other potentially hazardous materials.
  • May have to work in cramped spaces or otherwise uncomfortable positions in the performance of assigned tasks.
  • Must be able to lift/pull/push up to 50 pounds without assistance.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate tools, computer keyboard, and mouse.
