Position Summary

Working independently under the broad supervision of the Principal Investigator, this position is responsible for assisting and carrying out the activities of the research program as specified in the grant application.

This is a time-limited part-time 10% FTE position that is expected to work for 3 to 5 months.

Full salary range for this position: $95,717 to $144,183 per year. The typical hiring range for this position is from $95,717 (minimum) to $119,950 (midpoint), based on 100% FTE. The starting salary is determined based on the candidate’s knowledge, skills, experience, as well as budget availability.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate leadership and contribution to the alcohol, drug, and/or addiction health services research fields. In response to grant announcements, participate in the submission of grants including development of budget, budget justifications, fieldwork, specific aims, background and significance, research design and methods, and any other necessary components.
  • Draft and submit human subject protocols to Institutional Review Board.
  • Search relevant literature to identify new or related developments within the appropriate scientific fields.
  • Analyze data sets: May include data preparation (accessing/downloading, cleaning, and variable creation or recoding), creation of analysis plans, and implementation of appropriate statistical programs including but not limited to SPSS and STATA.
  • Write scientific papers either independently or in collaboration with peers under the aegis of the Principal Investigator. This includes conducting and reviewing literature relevant to the paper topics.
  • Present findings of studies at conferences under the aegis of the Principal Investigator.
  • Participate actively in ARG’s intellectual/scientific life through presence and presentations in the weekly seminar and other research-related seminars, as well as mentoring of pre- and post-doctoral fellows. Participate also in ARG administrative committees and other services.
  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in a relevant discipline and at least five years of work experience in a research position, or equivalent degree in relevant field.

Other Qualifications

  • Evidence of such contribution through authorship of at least five (5) peer-reviewed research papers (single authorship or in collaboration with others) as well as responsible participation in grant writing. Depending on how recently the degree was completed, individuals with a Doctoral degree may have fewer published papers.
  • Able to think creatively and independently.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of scientific alcohol literature and addiction health services literature.
  • Broad organizational, quantitative, writing, and editing skills.
  • Ability to work with and apply mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference; apply appropriate analytical approaches for a given research question, and interpret statistical tests.
  • Experience in and familiarity with statistical techniques necessary for large data sets, SPSS, STATA, advanced statistics, research methods, and behavioral science or health services utilization theory.

This position is classified as exempt based on the job duties. However, based on the FTE, salary level of the employee, or federal/state/local laws, the employee may be classified as nonexempt.
