Malden High School is committed to providing all students with a diverse, student-centered, and rigorous curriculum that is adaptable enough to reach all learning styles and needs. We do this through offering a wide variety of academic and enrichment opportunities. As an urban school, it is our great pride that we are among the leaders in Advanced Placement courses in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. We have continued to work closely with the BARR Foundation to complete a comprehensive review of academic offerings, instruction, curriculum, student data, and school-wide focus on areas of need. As a result of the data collected, we have focussed on improving the transition from middle school to high school, as well as establishing a vision for MHS and its students as they move through high school and prepare for college and career. We have also continued our work to help us move towards increasing our Student Growth Percentile (SGP) in ELA and Math MCAS.


Malden High School offers a wide variety of enrichment opportunities for students, including division 1 varsity, junior varsity, and freshman level athletics, robust theater, choral, and band programs, and over 70 clubs and organizations. We recognize a need to serve the many new English Language Learners in our population and are regularly examining a variety of programs and methods to better serve them to ensure academic success.


Holland House Principal:

The House Principal at Malden High School is responsible for the day-to-day organization and operation of the respective house as it fits within the larger school structure.


Responsibilities:

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Works to establish a calm and nurturing learning environment for all students and staff within the house structure.
  • Along with the Principal, the House Principal annually reviews the Student Handbook, the Program of Studies, the Principal calendar, the principal academic schedule, and any other publications developed by Malden High School.
  • Develops a system of frequent communication with students and parents within their house through e-mail, phone calls, letters, meetings, and other modes of communication.
  • Assists the Principal and Directors with the hiring of new staff within their house.
  • Assists the Principal and the Directors with the supervision and evaluation of the teachers, within the house. This is accomplished in part by visiting classrooms on a regular basis and by participating in the formal evaluation system.
  • Assists the Principal in the planning and organization of MCAS, graduation exercises, school assemblies, prom, and supervising parent/teacher evenings, open house events, grade eight transition days, athletic contests, social events (prom, dances), school concerts et al.
  • Works with the District’s School Attendance Office to ensure compliance with local and state laws.
  • Works with the school’s Community Resource Office to establish a safe and calm school environment.
  • Serves as a liaison to DCF when the student(s) is a member of that house.
  • Serves as a liaison to the Court and probation System when the student is a member of that house.
  • Supervises and evaluates the house secretary.
  • Oversees the collection of data within the house, including but not limited to the following:
    • Student Attendance
    • Student grades
    • Supplementary entries
    • Report card entries
    • Grade changes
    • Discipline entries
    • College admissions decisions
    • Special Education referrals
    • 504 Accommodations
  • The House Principal has secondary oversight of the guidance delivery within the house. The House Principal works with the house guidance counselor to ensure equity and access for all the students in the house to health services, tutoring, academic support, college access, summer programs, employment opportunities and anything else that will benefit the short and long term goals of the students.
  • The House Principal is the final arbiter for scheduling decisions for their students.
  • The House Principal works with the Special Education Department, their house Guidance Counselor, and all staff to ensure that all applicable Individual Education Plans (IEP) and 504 Accommodations are being followed in accordance with state and federal guidelines.
  • Serves as a member of the High School Administrative Team.
  • Serves as a member of the High School Leadership Team.

  • Serves as a member of the District Leadership Team.

  • Serves as a liaison to outside partners when needed, including the Posse foundation, Summer Search, Harvard Graduate School of Education, Colby-Sawyer Progressive Scholars and others as identified by the Principal.

  • Other responsibilities as requested by the principal.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of five years of successful classroom teaching experience.
  • A Master’s degree or higher in educational administration or related field.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, organizational and communication skills.
  • Strong knowledge of best practices in teaching and learning.
  • Massachusetts licensure as a Secondary/Assistant Principal and SEI Admin Endorsement.
  • Successful experience working with a diverse population of students preferred.
  • Knowledge of current research in education on effective secondary schools, small learning communities, integrated curriculum, teaming, student achievement, and school climate.

Commensurate with Malden Public Schools’ Unit B salary schedule.
