Position Summary Information

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The American Indian Center (AIC) supports the University’s overall mission by using its resources in service to North Carolina’s American Indian communities and to the general public. The AIC is classified as a campus-wide Center and provides support for teaching, student engagement and research about American Indians. It serves as the University’s primary means of outreach and service to North Carolina’s Native population, which is the largest in the eastern United States, and to other Native communities across the country. The AIC is a key and important cultural, intellectual, and social site for Native students, faculty and staff and is a valued voice in campus conversations on diversity, inclusion, and scholarship. Its presence and work ensures that American Indian perspectives continue to enrich the learning environment of the entire University.

Position Summary
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

The Administrative Associate’s primary purpose is to provide administrative support to the American Indian Center(AIC) staff. The individual selected for this position will work closely with the director of the AIC and its staff to create, support, and maintain Center sponsored programs. This includes but is not limited to serving as the primary contact for answering phones, greeting guests, and providing quality service to students, partners, and constituents. This person will manage the Center’s communications by serving as a liaison between AIC, North Carolina Native communities, and the campus community as well as typing documents, arranging travel, and updating social media. This position will also monitor and reconcile budgets and accounts in liaison with the UBC for Academic and Community Engagement. Additionally, the person will train the AIC team on the operation of general office equipment and software.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
  • Proven customer service experience.
  • Excellent written and oral skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Familiarity with operating office equipment, website and social media communications.
  • Ability to multitask projects with similar deadlines.
  • Strong problem solving/analytic skills.
  • Strong work ethic and independent thinker.
  • Drive to respond to matters in a timely fashion.
  • Ability to independently plan, manage, and meet deadlines for multiple projects with minimal supervision and a positive attitude.

  • Experience working with students and student groups, and tribal communities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with confidential and sensitive information.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting students, colleagues and constituents.
  • Familiarity with data collection and management.
  • Familiarity with UNC-CH system.
