The Opportunity:
The University of Central Florida (UCF) Nicholson School of Communication and Media (NSCM) in the College of Sciences is seeking a qualified Academic Advisor III. The Academic Advisor II will be responsible for specialized advising for students in the NSCM. The Academic Advisor III will communicate and disseminate academic and co-curricular information to students, universities, community, state colleges, and external partners on the advising process.
Responsibilities:
Academic Advising:
  • Provide academic advising to support student retention and graduation initiatives.
  • Identify and help resolve obstacles impeding the academic success of students (or a particular subset of students for example probation students).
  • Analyze students' academic and personal issues/concerns and provide referral/intervention services.
  • Support students in developing a required academic plan to meet graduation requirements.
  • Explain academic policies, procedures, and guidelines to students to meet their educational goals.
  • Educate students about the value of academic advisement and the importance of the registration process.
  • Coordinate mentoring or specific programming for students within various academic programs.
  • Guide students through college and university-level administrative processes.
  • Assess advising practices and programming.
  • Maintain appropriate student records and document student interactions.
  • May be assigned to support specific academic departments, programs, or student populations.
  • Utilize advising technology systems to manage student data.
Transition Programming and Orientation:
  • Coordinate and present orientations and transition programming for students.
  • Participate in major-related course planning to assist students with the transition process.
  • Advise students on major change processes and options and provide referrals if necessary.
  • Develop and manage activities, communication, and outreach with all constituents regarding the academic advising process.
  • Engage prospective students in a variety of communication and outreach events.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree and 3+ years of relevant experience, or a Master's degree and 1+ year.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's Degree.
