The Academic Advisor provides comprehensive academic advising (including general education, graduation requirements, degree plans and university policy and procedure) to undergraduate students. Provide specialized advisement to students on academic probation. Maintain detailed and accurate advising notes.
Serve as an advising liaison to a specific school or college, and develop and maintain collaborative relationships with department chairs/program heads and program advisors. Perform other duties as assigned. Assist in developing and giving presentations to students at campus-wide advising events including New Student Orientation. Perform other duties as assigned.
Responsibilities

  • Serve as primary advisor for a caseload of undergraduate students.
  • Provide comprehensive advising including: general education; degree planning; major and minor exploration/selection; university policy and procedures.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate advising notes.
  • Regularly review academic advancement of assigned students to ensure satisfactory progress.
  • Assess problems in underlying academic difficulties and refer students to appropriate department for further support and counseling.
  • Provide general advisement on a walk-in basis to undergraduate students (including freshman and transfer students).
  • Provide specialized advising to students on academic probation and work closely with them to monitor academic progress for removing probationary status.
  • Assist in the development of advising programs and resources
  • Assist in developing and giving presentations to students at campus-wide advising events including New Student Orientation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • At least one to two years of professional work experience in career development, counseling or advising.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to explain complex academic policies and procedures to diverse constituents, including students, faculty and staff.
  • Knowledge of developmental advising theory and practice.
  • Knowledge of information systems related to student records and advising.
  • Proven ability to interpret and apply academic policies and standards governing student degree requirement, academic progress and probation.
  • Strong analytical skills to gather data, analyze information, arrive at sound conclusions and provide accurate recommendations and prepare documentations.
  • Organizational skills to prioritize workload and provide assistance to assigned students in a timely manner.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team member.
  • Strong computer skills in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, email and internet applications, preferably of Microsoft Office Suite software.
  • Technical skills to learn and use department tools and enterprise systems.
  • Proven ability to evaluate student transcripts and/or records.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to interact with diverse constituents and to provide high quality support and customer service to students.
  • Sensitivity to the needs of students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to demonstrate tact and diplomacy and maintain a high level of confidentiality.

Desired Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in counseling, student development or related field.
  • One to two years of direct academic advising experience in a higher education setting
  • Knowledge of Chapman University policies and procedures pertaining to the duties of the position.
  • Knowledge of online program evaluation resources, preferably of PeopleSoft’s Degree Audit.
