ABC Parent Coach
Job description
POSITION TITLE: Parent Coach
POSITION REPORTS TO: Chief Program Officer
Organization:
Mental Health America of Eastern Missouri (MHA-EM) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting mental health as a critical part of overall wellness through direct service, advocacy, and education. MHA-EM is deeply committed to our B4Stage4 philosophy, an approach to mental health grounded in the encouragement of early interventions to prevent and treat mental health conditions. To strengthen this commitment, MHA-EM recently launched a clinical program aimed at supporting parents and caregivers in providing sensitive and responsive caregiving which has been shown to protect children from toxic stress, as well as promote self-regulation and secure attachment, thus protecting them from potential physical and mental health issues later in life.
MHA-EM utilizes Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-up (ABC) to work with parents, caregivers, and families in the St. Louis community. ABC is a home-based parent-coaching program, developed by Professor Mary Dozier and her team at the University of Delaware, that brings out caregivers’ innate ability to respond sensitively to their children. ABC is a ten-week program for caregivers with children ages 6 months to 48 months that focuses on helping caregivers provide nurturance and predictable environments for their children, thus enhancing children’s ability to manage their behaviors and emotions.
Position Summary:
The Parent Coach is responsible for completing training in, and implementing, ABC with at-risk parents/caregivers and their young children in their homes. The Parent Coach will assist with cultivating referrals and promoting the clinical program, as well as be responsible for assessing a family’s appropriateness for treatment and/or need for referral to other providers. The Parent Coach will provide encouragement, empathy, and unconditional positive regard for all clients.
